so like...maybe this is weird. and obviously whether a villager is ugly is a matter of opinion. but i feel like out of all the villagers that have debuted in new horizons, none of them stand out as being particularly "ugly" or odd looking. they're all very conventionally cute or cool or pretty. and there's nothing wrong with that! but i think it's interesting to think about how there's no new villagers widely considered to be ugly.

and i think i'm nicer to new horizons than the average person, but i kind of...don't like that? i feel like it kind of represents the main criticism people tend to have about the game, that it prioritizes the aesthetics over the personality. i wasn't, like...old enough to talk? when the first couple games were new, so i wouldn't know, but i feel like in the old days some people got attached to specific villagers for their personalities in their town even if they were ugly. even in new leaf, my favorite villager is pudge because he was one of my first and best friends in new leaf, and i've seen more than one person say he's ugly or weird looking. same for chester, another one of my best friends. people think he's ugly! but he's such a good friend to me i don't care how he looks! (of course i do think he's cute. when you like someone it's hard to think they're ugly.)

i don't think it's impossible to form these kinds of attachments to villagers in new horizons. my best friend in new horizons is one of the villagers who debuted in it (megan) (yeah, i know, another bear, what a surprise. lol). but i feel like the developers...thought it would be? so they focused on making cute and cool villagers that would be crowd pleasers based on their aesthetic. and maybe they just didn't want to design a villager that people wouldn't like based on appearance because it would bum them out, i think that's fair, but i think they should have more fun with it without worrying about that! i miss ugly villagers! i'm glad the old ones at least still exist in this game. like, i actively hate barold (looks like an offensive caricature) and boone (he brought havoc upon my new leaf town), but i wouldn't want them to be deleted from new horizons because there are people who feel attachments to them from older games. i feel like new horizons is already a little over-sanitized in terms of dialogue (even cranky villagers aren't mean to you unless you really provoke them), i feel like these ugly villagers need to exist to balance it out.

sorry this is kind of a rambly post. i hope this makes sense. i want to know other people's thoughts, like if they've noticed this and what they think about ugly villagers.

I'm sorry you hate Barold--to me he looks like an old railroad bum from a 1950s-1960s movie.

In the end, it's all subjective just like real-life attractions. Everyone has things they like and don't like.

I hate when people call Hazel ugly just because of her unibrow. Barold is also a silly-willy and I hate that people hate him. it makes me angry. Ugly Villagers aren't really truly "ugly" in my opinion. like @UpFalls said, it's all subjective.

I hate that Aesthetic is the name of the game now. (Though I can't really be talking, Mr. Pastel Kidcore Island lol. PLEASE STITCHES, PIETRO, APPLE, MERINGUE I NEED YOU) but having a goal island looks-wise is important I guess. It makes you want to make an effort and put some time into your island.

But that's just me! Do whatever, I don't care!
