Okay, but your drawings rock?! I'm a fan of how you draw traditional sketches, Ogerpon looks awesome with the teal mask. :0 And Mudhound is so adorable, I wanna draw them at some point! 🤎

Thank you! The Teal Mask is just one of the masks Ogerpon wears in battle, and she has three more of them! (One is the Wellspring Mask, which I drew a while ago.)

Ahh I'm so flattered! Yes, that would be great, and I can't wait to see it!! I also want to add that I might try writing a short story with Cosmew and Mudhound so I can explore their dynamic a little more...with that one poem as my muse, of course! (Oh and FYI, Mudhound is a guy, so he uses he/him pronouns.)

Hi Suguri! I hope you don't mind me posting here, but I just wanted to say that I really like your drawings! I was lurking and saw that you had a 'how to draw' tutorial for one of your characters, so I decided to give it a try.
Here's my attempt at Crisp the Artist! 🐱🖌️🎨

Hi, just saw this! I didn't expect someone to actually follow my tutorial, I only made it for fun. Anyway, it looks very nice, and I'm digging all the background stuff you put there! 💜

A few things I made over the week:
Decline and Punishment.png

#1 - A very rough piece delving into Kieran's post-Teal Mask mindset! I drew this after Petey's quote in Dog Man: Grime and Punishment (see below) inspired me, hence why I titled my art Decline and Punishment; I thought it was the kind of stuff that would resonate with Kieran, even if I think it's a little inaccurate. (For context, I believe his decisions in the second part of the Pokémon Scarlet/Violet DLC stemmed from jealousy instead of hatred.)
Sometimes bad things happen, and you just can't forgive... And you can't forget! Sometimes all you've got left is hate!

IMG1875.jpg

#2 - This is the painting I made for art class, starring Crisp! Even though she is supposed to be the subject of this piece, I consider the background my favorite part of the painting. I was going to make her say "wowzers" instead of "wowzas" but I couldn't fit the letters with the brush I used.

sakura week sig.png

#3 - A drawing of Ogerpon for Sakura Week! I tried the symmetry feature for the first time and I find it very convenient for front-facing characters. I also decided to draw her with her actual eyes instead of the black dots/lines I used in my previous works. Unfortunately, I'm skipping the event because of life stuff, so I plan to have my partner help me get a purple hyacinth in the meantime.

Finally, I want to mention that I managed to finish a short story I started working on last week! It will be about my OCs Mudhound and Cosmew. I'm still waiting to get feedback from my partner before I can post it in full, so I hope you can wait a little longer for it.

Wow, I've been drawing too much lately hahah! I'll dump everything here before I overload and stuff.

First and foremost, I know it's not a drawing, but I've decided to finally release my short story, The Mud and the Stars, which is about the friendship between my OCs Mudhound and Cosmew. I wanted to have my partner @/ZeldaCrossing64 read over it before I decided to post it, but I decided against it because it was fine as it is. Anyway, I had so much fun writing this, but mainly because I was inspired mostly by Dog Man as usual (and a certain short poem). I hope you enjoy reading! Notes are at the bottom of the story text.
In a wide bay mud, there lived a dog. Every day, he trotted through shallow puddles with brown stains caked onto his fur. Since no one was here to make fun of him, he was free to be as dirty as possible. Once he was done for the day, he bathed in a crystal-clear pond nearby.

One night, as he was finishing his bath, the dog felt tired and lay down to take a nap. As he was about to close his eyes, he found himself gazing at the night sky. He never had a chance to really think about what was there because he was so busy with the mud… Until now.

The sky seemed like a void with dots of white at first, but it was much more than that; it was a whole new dimension. A dimension where the merging of black and blue equaled a glitter bomb of flickering diamonds and pearls, and where birds soared towards who-knows-where and touched the stars.

It captivated the dog, and he reached up, hoping to touch the stars as well—but he was disappointed when he noticed those stars were so far away from him.

He looked at the earth and frowned. Compared to the scene up above, it didn’t have much beauty in and of itself. He was still happy about the mud, of course, but beyond that, it had the desolation of a desert. Soon a new, strong feeling began to grow inside of him: it was discontent over simply being there.

He sighed and began to wonder, Why can't I be like the birds?

But then… THUMP!

The dog got up and saw something beside him: a strange, glowing cat-like being that appeared to be made of the essence of a galaxy, with its colors varying from blue to purple to pink and their fur dusted with glitter. They were breathing normally despite the impact they sustained from falling through the sky, or so he thought. (He was looking down at the time, so it was a little hard for him to tell. He would have to figure that out later.)

“Hey,” whispered the dog, as he slowly approached them with his paw hovering. A cautious hound, his body grew tense and he hoped that this creature wouldn’t suddenly leap at him.

That didn’t happen, thankfully. Instead, the cat turned towards him and revealed their big, shining eyes. Then they said “Hi,” saw his paw, and lowered their head as if they wanted to be petted.

The dog smiled, relieved that they were calm and friendly by nature. He stroked the cat's head; it was cool, but also soft.

At a time when the dog almost felt uncertain, he had a fateful encounter with a cute kitten. Finally, a new friend! They were not only a potential playmate but also someone who was most likely willing to talk about life with him. Oh, the countless days they would spend together…

Soon he grew drowsy and rested his head on the ground once more. Before he drifted off to sleep, he felt the cat shifting closer to him and heard a quiet purr.

The next day came. The sun's rays brightened the now-blue sky, and a little dirt had already dried. However, the mud puddles remained, and the dog was glad about that.

So he decided to introduce his new friend to the bay mud and how he spent his free time. He let himself fall into a big puddle with a splash, and then he rolled and rolled around.

The cat looked with such wonder and curiosity that they soon joined the dog and rolled on the wet ground with him. They played for hours, and eventually, the cat was covered with so much sod that their shimmering fur was nowhere to be seen.

The dog later noticed that he, too, was smothered in dripping mud. They looked at each other and laughed merrily.

By that point, the sun was setting, and they had to get cleaned, so they went to the pond and dipped their bodies in the water.

While they were washing themselves and each other, the dog curiously asked the cat, "Where are you from?"

The cat turned their head to the night sky and pointed. "Up there," they answered. The dog’s suspicions were confirmed. "I was just floating around, looking for a friend among the stars.

“As I was exploring, I spotted a giant, blue planet. I went near it, but then I realized I couldn’t float there. I fell to the ground, and then I saw you."

The dog looked towards the sky, taking in what the cat said about their home.

"So there is a place on the other side of this earth," he registered. "I wish I could be up there with you, but it's so far away. How can I get there?"

The cat just looked down sadly. “...You can't.”

“Oh, yeah…” the dog replied while copying the cat’s expression. “I was wondering, because sometimes when I look at the sky at night, it makes me want to be up there instead of down here.” The dog patted the ground as he explained himself.

“And that made me realize how huge the world really is. I mean, I just want more out of life than mud puddles. I still like it here and all, but… Is that all? Is that all I’m gonna get for the rest of my life? Just mud?”

He turned to the cat. They were deep in thought, and he could tell because they had their paw on their chin.

After a while, they put their paw down. The next thing they said was: “Two men looked through prison bars. One saw mud. The other, stars.

The dog stared silently at the cat.

“What’s that even mean?”

“I don't know, but it reminded me of you. I got it from someone on another planet; he told me it inspired him once he read it in this thing called a book that he got from a blue planet… Probably the one I’m in right now.”

Still confused over the poem, he decided not to think too much about it and continued to wash them. Soon, the stains had disappeared from the dog’s and the cat’s fur.

The two got up from the pond and shook off the water. The dog stretched himself, ready to nap, when he heard a faint thud.

The cat had collapsed, and they were breathing heavily. Shocked, the dog rushed to the cat and held their head to his.

"Are you okay!? Are you alright!? Was that from the fall!?" he spoke worriedly.

"Back...I will be back home..." the cat merely responded.

"Answer me!! Are you okay!?" the dog squealed.

The cat's panting slowed. They shivered and looked up at the dog with a look of hope in their eyes.

"My friend," they comforted. "I will be fine. I’ve landed on planets the same way billions of times before, and on all of those occasions, I survived. It's just that the time has come for me to return to the stars. It's where I belong, and because of that, I can't stay in places like yours for long. I'm grateful for all the mud you’ve got, but more importantly? I'm glad we met."

The dog began to tear up and embrace the cat. The cat reached out and touched the dog's cheek.

"You don't have to hold me close and cry," they breathed. "I won't be here, but I will not die."

Then their eyes closed, and their body fell limp. The body began to glow, and it rose quickly to the sky.

With his head up towards Heaven, the dog howled for his one and only friend, who introduced him to the world beyond his home in the bay mud.

Later, he trudged back to his home, unable to look at it the same way. It felt like nothing more than miles and miles of dirt. And there was no beauty and no value to be found in filthy dirt compared to the stars at night.

But that wasn't all: he was just a tiny speck of life in a vast, barren land, and the one person he managed to befriend was gone in a flash. And since no one was there to judge him for how messy he could be, that also meant there wasn’t anyone else who loved the mud as much as he did... Other than that cat.

"I thought I loved it here," the dog lamented. "But that's just not reality. The real world is filled with nothing but mud. The real world is a horrible place. It's mostly misery and loneliness out there, and that's reality…

Right?”

In an instant, he remembered what happened to the cat and looked up. There it was: the most beautiful, most brilliant night sky he ever saw. The diamonds and pearls had increased in abundance, and somewhere within the stars, he swore he could make out a cat's head.

And so, he finally realized what the cat’s poem really meant. Instead of dwelling on how unfair life could be, he would look for the stars—or make the most out of his circumstances—in times of doubt.

The End

Notes

  • The Mud and the Starswas inspired by:
    • Dog Man: For Whom the Ball Rolls by Dav Pilkey (The title comes from one of the chapters, and Mudhound’s dialogue at the end is based on a quote from one of the characters.)
    • Two men looked through prison bars by an unknown author
    • Immortality by Clare Harner; Cosmew's last words to Mudhound are based on the last two lines of the poem: “Do not stand by my grave, and cry— / I am not there, I did not die” (Sound familiar? A variant of this poem was referenced in Dog Man: Grime and Punishment.)
  • The story was originally planned as a picture book, but this concept has since been shelved.

Speaking of Mudhound, I can't believe I forgot to share this here! I did a bunch of doodles of him and Cosmew in my sketchbook a few weeks ago so I could get his design and colors down. (I settled on v2!) On the bottom is some concept art for my story if it were a book.

Here's a recent digital drawing I made of Kieran, Ogerpon, and Juliana (the female player character from ScarVio)! It's based on the cover for Dog Man: Mothering Heights, and I wanted to make it because Kieran adores Ogerpon, and Ogerpon's current trainer (after beating The Teal Mask) is the player, and I just thought the idea was cute lol.
glimmeringheightsnewhair.png

IMG_1903.jpeg
Side note: Mothering Heights has one of the cutest covers of All Time. It also gives off gay/MLM vibes for me somehow, especially with Dog Man and Petey lol. (Maybe it's because it shows Li'l Petey with his two dads?) I told that to Char and they were like "lol fr 😭". 🤣

This is something I started and finished today! I wanted to draw Petey's Ratterfly because there was a how-to-draw guide for it in one of my Dog Man books, so I decided to give it a try and color it too. It looked challenging, but it was so much fun in the end! 🐁🦋

And now for my random sketches and whatnot:
Two drawings of my Dog Man parody, Man Dog. The one on the right is a comic I rushed out. ^^;

A sketch of Kieran my beloved. 💜 I was looking at @/ZeldaCrossing64's drawings of humans while I was doodling him.

Ogerpon quoting John 8:7 (New Testament). It's actually supposed to be based on a scene from Mothering Heights involving Petey, since both he and Ogerpon initially had bad reputations.

Kieran as Petey and Juliana as Dog Man. XD They're in love with each other too!

Kieran saying "Good," but instead it's Petey. Good.

Oh and I need to show you what this sketch was based on. I laugh every time I see it for some reason. 😆

After looking at the cool sig @/ZeldaCrossing64 made, I was inspired to whip up some Crisp pixel art of my own! I tried drawing my fursona in the style of the Pokémon Red/Blue games because I am obviously a nut for this franchise. It doesn't look too bad! At first. It was my first time doing pixel art so it could be better lol.

Eventually, I put her sprite in Paint.net (an image editor) and messed around with several images from The Spriters Resource to make it look like she was really from the Gen 1 Pokémon games.

Here is yet another art dump from me!!

One time, as I was browsing DeviantArt, I saw some fan art of Dog Man characters as Pokémon! (link is here!) My favorite design was Dog Man as a Dachsbun, so I had to make some drawings of him...with some creative liberties, of course. BTW, I used a sticker of Dog Man (that I've had for almost a decade!!) as a reference for the traditional drawing.
Part Dachsbun, part man, all toasty!
IMG_1946.jpeg
dachsbun man!.png

It was from this activity booklet that came with my copy of the first Dog Man book (which I don't have anymore, unfortunately.) I want to mail it to @ZeldaCrossing64 but it's going to be a while before we can hit that point.
IMG_1295.jpeg

And here's my drawing of Fugue, one of @/VernalLapin's OCs, for the "Draw the user above you" thread! I had a little trouble with the hair but it looks pretty decent, honestly. I used the Pinterest board thing provided in the references as inspiration for her outfit and the cookie she's eating. Also, the music notes are a nod to the fact that her name reminds me of music somehow.
fugue.png

See below for my sketchbook doods!
These three were sketches I made based on requests I took from other users. @ZeldaCrossing64 wanted Crisp and Char (their fursona), @lasagne_of_death wanted a Poochyena, and @xSuperMario64x wanted this Canadian cat that was on his PFP some time ago.
IMG_1923.jpg
IMG_1935.jpg
IMG_1934.jpg

I tried drawing some cat Pokémon in my art style once. They are supposed to be Meowth and Floragato. Meowth looks funny but I think it's because its head isn't oval-shaped. ^^" I like my Floragato drawing better. That Pokémon has one of best designs for a middle evolution starter IMO.
IMG_1951.jpg

The rest of these here are random doodles I made while I was bored. Some of them reference @ZeldaCrossing64, haha. Hmm, can you guess which?? 👀

oh my goodness the Canada cat!! I love it, it definitely screams "Suguri" to me!! thank you for drawing him hehee 🥹💗🇨🇦

and the other drawings are lovely as always! 🥰

Oh I love all your dogman art so much!! Your really perfecting it, I thought it was all offical!! Keep up the great work

I have finally updated Crisp's reference sheet and other info for 2025. (This was right after I saw @/ZeldaCrossing64's latest post in their art thread, lol) The reference sheet I made last year was drawn on Scratch (which has a limited amount of drawing tools) and I wanted to make a new one that was more detailed.

I have more drawings to post here, but I think I'd rather single this one out and save the rest for another time. Stay tuned!

Thank you very much for the compliment! 💜

Also, I can totally relate to that feeling; I used to think my art wasn't good enough before I made my own thread here. It might be easier said than done, but there's no need to worry about how your art may look. As long as you're having fun with it, you're good to go! One user here said something like this in a post once and it continues to resonate with me to this day. It went, "There is no such thing as bad art."

Perhaps if you're looking for where to start with drawing, I would suggest researching some simple drawing guides for animals, characters, or anything else online. Also, if you've ever heard of and enjoy Dav Pilkey's books (not sure how old you are though, considering his target audience), you can check out his "How 2 Draw" guides for some of his characters here. Some of the designs are simple to draw and the steps are broken down line-by-line, so it might help you a bit. (And I do apologize if this advice doesn't work for you, it's the best I could say at the moment.)

And when you're following those tutorials, you don't have to worry about making look exactly like the final result shown. You can put your own spin on it, if you know what I mean! You might also find yourself making some mistakes in the process, and that is fine. Think of them not as an impediment, but as a lesson to learn, something that can help you grow.

I can't wait to see what you make later! And I mean it. We on TBT are a friendly bunch, so I doubt anyone will hate on your art here. Remember to do what makes you happy, and you gotta believe! 💜

P.S. here's another quote, this time from my partner @/ZeldaCrossing64, just so I can remind you: "Art can still be good, even if it looks 'messy' or 'bad'."

With the TBT Egg Hunt coming in full swing (soon), I thought it would be fun to draw something to celebrate not just the event, but also Easter in general! I was going to draw Crisp inside an egg or have her wear an egg costume until my partner began hyperfixating on Who Framed Roger Rabbit?. I'm really digging the design of the titular character, so I decided to have her cosplay as him. I love this drawing overall; Crisp looks great in that goofy costume lol.

Speaking of the Egg Hunt, they had a contest for a while where you could design an egg collectible, and this was my entry for it: the Peep-A-Boo Egg. I based this on the Peep-a-Boo Egg item from Roblox (which I don't play anymore.) It's cute and I like it! I doubt the staff would pick it, though. =P As of my posting this, the event had not started yet. (EDIT 4/18/2025: It did not make the cut! :,) It's fine, though. Maybe it'll return later in the distant future!)

Here are some extra, badly-drawn eggs for fun. The left one is a Kieran egg, and the right one is a Pecharunt egg.

My 3rd TBT anniversary is coming up in a few days, so what better way to celebrate than to draw this little tribute! It's essentially Crisp in front of a whiteboard covered with a bunch of references to me and all the things I enjoy.
Suguri 3rd Anniversary.png

Note the differences here. I had to divert from the sketch to accommodate the marker brush I used for the whiteboard doodles.

If this drawing looks familiar to you, that's because I was inspired by something my partner @ZeldaCrossing64 made almost 2 years ago! It was such a clever idea, I couldn't help but try something similar. Like what they did in their post, I'll gladly explain all the little doodles on the whiteboard in the spoiler below.
Moon, stars, and mud - A reference to one of my favorite scenes from Dog Man: For Whom The Ball Rolls, and also the poem that inspired it (which happens to be my favorite too). The poem in question went like this:
Two men looked through prison bars.
One saw mud. The other, stars.

Ogerpon - My #1 favorite Pokémon. No other 'mon can top my beloved.
Kieran - My favorite Pokémon character and major crush! I find his Indigo Disk appearance easier to draw than his Teal Mask appearance.
Li'l Petey - The moment Petey cloned himself, this kitten stole my heart. I see him as an inspiration to everyone, and I love his dynamic with his dad! The stuff he's saying is a quote from For Whom The Ball Rolls.
Town Tune Egg - One of my all-time favorite collectibles alongside the Bluebird of Happiness Plush! It's saying "pthhpth", which is the catchphrase of Bob, my favorite AC villager. (Not the other Bob.)
Char = Petey - When I first saw my partner's fursona (this was before we started dating), I told them they looked a lot like Petey in his edgy phase. This doodle is an homage to that. Crisp is also in love with Char, which is why there's an arrow pointing to them alongside a cute message.
Bob - He was the first OC I ever made, and should not be confused with my favorite Animal Crossing villager. He doesn't appear very often in my art nowadays, but it never hurts to reference him every once in a while.
The Bark Knight (Dog Man) - I followed a "How 2 Draw" guide in my copy of Dog Man: Lord of the Fleas to draw this character!
Poké Ball and Triforce - Because I like Pokémon and Char likes Zelda.
world's most wholesomest cat - A special nod to Petey's (former) title, the "World's Most Evilest Cat".
"wowzers!" - Kieran's very adorable catchphrase!
Nintendo 3DS - It will always be my favorite console from Nintendo. I used to play on one, which I lost, and then I got another to replace it, which I ended up losing also.
celestial! - The title of one of my favorite songs! It was sung by Ed Sheeran, and it appeared in the end credits for Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. A remix of this also appears in the end credits for its DLC!
Bluebird of Happiness Plush - Another one of my all-time favorite collectibles!
Applin - Just a nice little Pokémon I wanted to add. You can get an Applin from Kieran in the DLC, which is pretty cute, if you ask me!
"It's your story, reader. You can color it any way you want!" - This is based on a quote that is repeated a few times in Dog Man: Grime and Punishment. I thought it would be fitting to include it with how colorful the whiteboard is.

While we're still here, I made yet another drawing of Crisp as Roger Rabbit holding a Town Tune egg!
town tune egg!!!.png

Her ears were originally smaller than in the final product, but it looked off to me so I had to change that.
1745126720781-png.619226
I also made this cute sketch of her yesterday, where she's reenacting my favorite scene from Who Framed Roger Rabbit. I really like how I drew the eyes! I was going to make it a comic, but I felt weird drawing two characters about to kiss for some reason.

And here's my last Crisp drawing for this post. It's based on Char's drawing of her as Bugs Bunny, and in here, she's butchering a world-famous catchphrase from him. I had to use a reference from Dog Man for her pose because I don't often draw my characters lying down.

And finally, even more of my rough sketches. Some of these were made through "How 2 Draw" guides from the books and online. I'll be putting them in spoilers because of their size.

My 3rd TBT anniversary is coming up in a few days, so what better way to celebrate than to draw this little tribute! It's essentially Crisp in front of a whiteboard covered with a bunch of references to me and all the things I enjoy.

Her ears were originally smaller than in the final product, but it looked off to me so I had to change that.

That is awesome to see! Happy 3rd anniversary! Soon it will be a year since my first day at Bell Tree Forums in 2024!
