This guide will cover Competitive battling, EV's, EV training, IV's, natures and all you need to know on how to get a good team.
1.0:What is EV Training?
EV's stand for effort values, each Pokemon gives at least one EV in any 1 category, EG: Machop +1 attack. An EV in any one nature maxes out at 255, but we only go up to 252 as it takes 4 EV's to make 1 stat point. 510 EV point spread is available for a single Pokemon. So the basic spread would be 252/252/4, the 4 usually used in HP. So to get 252 points in attack you have to defeat 252 Pokemon, but thankfully Nintendo has helped us condense 252 into 26. First there is the mystic virus PokeRus, this doubles the amount of EV's gained. So a Machop giving 1 EV would be 1*2=2. There is also the Macho Brace which functions like the Pokerus, so if both were on the Pokemon it would be 1*2*2=4. But of course on Diamond, Pearl and Platinum there are Power items for each stat.
Power Weight ---> HP
Power Belt----> Defense
Power Bracer ---> Attack.
Power Lens ---> Special Attack.
Power Band---> Special Defense.
These add 4 to the EV's, so a Machop gives out 1 plus the belt. (1+4) if it has Pokerus it doubles it, so (1+4)*2=10.
That way you only need to defeat 25 Machops with the Bracer and Pokerus plus one without the Bracer.
There are also items called vitamins, you may use them 10 times on a stat and it will increase it by 10 EV points.
Hp Up-->HP
Iron--->Defense.
Carbos--->Speed.
Protein--->Attack.
Zinc--->Special Defense.
Calcium--->Special attack.
You may use 10 Vitamins on any 2 stats. So you can reduce the amount of Pokemon you need to defeat by almost half if using pokerus and Power items.
Also, if you accidentally mess up some EV's, not to worry there are some berries that decrease EV's by 10.
Here's a list of those berries.
Pomeg Berry--> Decreases 10 HP EVs
Kelpsy Berry---> Decreases 10 Attack EVs
Qualot Berry---> Decreases 10 Defense EVs
Hondew Berry----> Decreases 10 Special Attack EVs
Grepa Berry---> Decreases 10 Special Defense EVs
Tamato Berry---> Decreases 10 Speed EVs
Finally to check you've maxed out the EV's, go to Sunnyshore city in the seal shop and talk to the lady to the left, she will give your Pokemon an effort ribbon if done properly.
I will now do a small section about breeding.
1.1: Breeding & tips for breeding.
Note: Egg Moves, IV's and Natures will be explained later.
Basically, you can use a ditto plus a Pokemon which can breed and put them in the Day-Care center in Solaceon town. After riding your bike a bit an egg may appear if the Pokemon are compatible.
Some Tips for competitive breeding.
~Ride your bike back and forth Solaceon town.
~Get a Pokemon with Flame body or Magma Armour. (Halves egg hatching time.)
~Do it while watching a movie if you're easily bored.
~Never give up.
~If not egg breeding get a Ditto for every nature.
~Use an everstone on the Pokemons nature you want to replicate. (Increases by 50%)
Now I will go on to explain natures and why they're useful for competitive battling.
1.2: What are natures and how do they affect Pokemon?
Natures increase a stat by 10% and decrease one by 10% unless it's neutral, doesn't sound like a lot but can cause big differences in competitive battling.
Here is a list of them.
+Attack,-Attack~Bashful.
+Attack,-Defense~Lonely.
+Attack,-Sp. Attack~Adamant.
+Attack,-sp. Defense~Naughty.
+Attack,-Speed~Brave.
+Defense,-Attack~Bold.
+Defense,-Defense~Docile
+Defense,-Sp. Attack~Impish
+Defense, -Sp. Defense~Lax
+Defense,-Speed~Relaxed
+Sp. Attack,-Attack~Modest
+Sp. Attack,-Defense~Mild
+Sp. Attack,-Sp. Attack~Hardy
+Sp. Attack, -Sp. Defense~ Rash
+Sp. Attack, - Speed~Quiet.
+Sp. Defense, -Attack~Calm
+Sp. Defense, -Defense~Gentle
+Sp. Defense, -Sp. Attack~Careful
+Sp. Defense, -Sp. Defense~Quirky.
+Sp. Defense, -Speed~Sassy
+Speed, - Attack~Timid
+Speed, - Defense~Hasty
+Speed, - Sp. Attack~Jolly
+Speed, - Sp. Defense~ Naive
+Speed, - Speed~Serious.
I suggest looking up on www.Smogon.com at what Pokemon should be what nature, it also has the EV spreads of Pokemon and competitive move-sets. Also www.Serebii.net has a list of the top 100 Pokemon in each stat.
I will move onto IV's.
1.3: IV's.
What are IV's?
IV's are hidden value's which are in all of the Pokemon stats.
They range from 1-31. 1 being the worst and 31 being the best.
Breeding for IV's takes a lot of patience but can do the extra bit when battling 2 of the same Pokemon or it makes a difference bettwen a KO and a survival on red HP. I don't personally breed for them, but if you want to it can make your team that bit better.
There are 2 ways of determining IV's, One is to use a IV calculator on Serebii or Smogon by raising your Pokemon to 100 in a Wi-Fi battle.
The 2nd is to go to this man in the battle tower and talk to him, he will tell you your best IV and tell you if it's good, above average, bad, perfect ect. The 2nd way wont tell you the other IV's though.
I will move onto a small summary on abilities.
1.4: Abilities
Most Pokemon have 2 abilities, but only 1 ability can be on a Pokemon, sometimes it doesn't matter, sometimes it does for some good combinations.
Like Mamoswine and Snow Cloak+Hail.
Ludicolo+Rain Dance and Swift Swim.
So your best bet is to research your Pokemon and see what combos it can create and how will the ability fit in with your strategy.
Now to explain Egg Breeding moves and moves in general.
1.5: Egg-Moves and how to get certain moves.
Have you ever noticed that your Egg hatched Pokemon has moves off the Parent? This is called Egg-Move Breeding, the Male passes on the move and the female is the species of Pokemon you want. So it may be a bit more arduous to get a perfect Pokemon but it's worth it as your Pokemon may have a move that it cannot learn. Eg: Ludicolo+Leech Seed which can be learned by breeding Ludicolo and torterra and A mean Looking Ralts, which can be obtained by breeding gengar and Gardevoir. Also with some Pokemon like Pikachu a certain item is needed.
You can get moves that you can't learn off a tutor in Platinum, make sure you stock up on Shards though.
Also a Heart Scale can let a Pokemon learn a move at a prior level which it has forgotten or is learned pre-evolutionary.
What moves are good for competitive battling?
Well, accuracy is important, also moves like Toxic and Leech Seed and stuff that slowly wear down your opponent are great for competitive battling. You're much better off with Flamethrower than Fire Blast due to accuracy.
STAB. (Same Type Attack Bonus) is great for competitive battling as it gives a move which has the same type as your Pokemon a 50% increment. Even if the pokemon is Dual-Typed it still gets STAB on both type of moves.
I will now write a short section about Competitive items.
1.6: Competitive Items.
It really depends on the Pokemon, A Pokemon with a wide type range of attacking moves might want an Expert Belt. A Pokemon with high attack may want a life orb or you can even Choice it but Choicing a Pokemon with a Band or Specs or Scarf will only allow one type of move to be used. Leftovers are good for stallers as they heal 1/16 of your health. Toxic orb or Flame orbs may sound daft but put them on a Breloom with Poison heal or Pokemon with Flash Fire and you're laughing. Some people think Lum berries are great items as they restore your status condition in my opinion no as they can only be used once in a battle. Other items to consider are Focus sashes which prevent your pokemon from fainting at full HP and if you are extremely weak against one type of move use a Bracing Berry like Occa to fire, even though it is only one type usages. Be creative and you'll find a perfect item for your strategy.
I will now explain Pokemon Terms.
1.7: Pokemon Terminology.
Physical Sweeper
A physical sweeper is customized to have high attack and speed.Use it
to knock out as many pokemon as possible with damaging attacks. Since physical sweepers usually focus on attack and speed and not in other areas, they also can be knocked out easily if the trainer is not careful. A good example is Aerodactyl. Many Sweepers use Focus sashes or Life orbs.
Special Sweeper
A special sweeper is customized to have high special attack and speed.
It's like the physical sweeper in almost every way. A good example is Alakazam.
Mixed Sweeper
A mixed sweeper can do physical or special attacks. Mixed sweepers can
cover both grounds of attacks, but are harder to train since stat increases are spread between raising attack and special attack. A good example is Swampert also known as MixPert.
Tank
A tank specializes in attacking as well as being able to survive
attacks. Most tanks have above average defenses and above average attacks. A good example of a tank is Snorlax which also has Curse at its power.
Sponge/Wall
A sponge specializes to absorb attacks, like a sponge, and live to tell
the about it. Most sponges are limited in what they can do, other than abosorb attacks. Skarmory is good for absorbing physical attacks, and Blissey is good at absorbing special attacks due forming the famous SkarmBliss combo, they usually come with 50% recovery moves as well.
Baton Passer
A Baton Passer specialzes in using stat modifications and then
applying them to the rest of the pokemon team using Baton Pass. Baton Passers need a lot of speed to pull this off, but supply a lot of power if the opponent is not ready for it. A good example is a Speed Bossting and Sword Dancing Ninjask.
Hazer/PHazer
A Hazer exists to negate stat changes with the move Haze. A PHazer is
using a move that is not Haze, but accomplishes the same purpose of Haze. Moves like Haze are Roar, Whirlwind and Yawn. Since a pokemon that switches out loses all its stat changes, those moves do what Haze do. Usually, most pokemon teams carry at least one Hazer to counter any surprizes that may come up. A good example is Crobat which also has the Taunting option which only allows attacking moves
I will now explain Team Building
1.8: Team Building and tiers.
Well a good team usually has a Wall, a Tank, a Physical Sweeper, a special sweeper, a Spiker/Stealth Rocker and maybe a Baton Passer/Staller/Annoyer or Mixed Sweeper.
Take your favourite Pokemon for example and use it.
Lets see mine would be Lugia but since that's Uber he is regularly banned from Competitive play so I'll choose Infernape.
So I choose Infernape, he can become a Mixed Sweeper. Check Smogon for great variations of MixApes.
Next I want a Pokemon which Infernape is weak to but can also cover water its own weaknesses, Lanturn wouldn't be that bad so I'll choose Lanturn. It is also immune from electric attacks.
Next you want a Wall/Tank or Staller. I'd suggest a Cursing Hippowdon with Slack off.
Also it is usually good to have a Spiker, so I'll choose Forretress which has phenomenal defense. It can learn both Toxic Spikes and Spikes and also has Explosion at its will to unleash some major damage when it has been weared dows. You can also use a Baton passer instead, Ninjask for Swords Dance and Speed Boost. Use these Pokemon at the start of a battle.
Now for a Physical and Special Sweeper, to balance your team out a bit I'd suggest Scizor for Physical with the ability Technician and Bullet Punch of course is a must or Gyrados as it's flying and you can swithch out Infernape to it to take away ground damage. For our Special Alakazam or Gengar which has Levitate and both very quick.
Be creative and think in advance and plan out your strategys is my only suggestion. It is also fun to plan out UU teams as they can be unpredictable and really fun to use.
Tiers.
What are tiers?
Tiers are basically just a way of categorising Pokemon.
The tiers are:
Uber- The strongest of them all. Are regularly banned from competitive play. Lugia is a Uber.
OU- The Pokmeon which are Over-Used, they are strong but not over powered and are usually used in competitive play.
UU- Under Used, My favourite tier, aren't as strong as OU but can be fun and creative to mess around with and can pull off unexpected wins.
NU- Never used, also a great tier to mess around with, even though most Pokemon here aren't worth EVing.
NFE- Not Fully Evolved, Basically Pokemon who haven't evolved fully. =p
Limbo- Pokemon which are getting tested to see if they can move tier.
I will explain explain a bit about Combinations in Battles.
1.9: Strategies and Combo's.
Single Battles.
You can either plan out your strategy as you go along or before you even EV the Pokemon, I like doing both. A lot of Strategy rely's on a Pokemon's ability.
Eg: Starmie and Electivire. If Starmie is up against a Electric pokemon or you know it has an Electric move in its roster you can switch out and get a speed boost due to Electivire's Motor Boost.
Some strategys rely on items. Sala-Sash, can Dragon Dance and then use Outrage and can survive a Ko-ing move as long as Stealth Rock isn't in play.
Some strategys rely on moves.
Sub-Seeders like Breloom uses spore on a Pokemon to make it go to sleep and then Substitute and uses its Toxic Orb to regain HP while Pulling out STAB Focus Punches.
Just experiment with your pokemon and you'll find a strategy which is right for you.
I will now explain clauses.
2.0: Clauses.
Have you ever seen someone type all Standard clauses on.
Well here are the Standard Clauses.
Sleep Clause: Only one pokemon on each team allowed asleep at a time. Self induced sleep such as using rest, do not count towards sleep clause.
Evasion Clause: Moves that increase a Pokemon's evasion, such as Double Team and Minimize, are banned. Acupressure doesn't fall under this clause since it is random.
Species Clause: No more than one Pokemon of a species allowed on a team. This means no teams consisting of 2 or more Infernape, Gyarados, Electivire, etc.
One-hit KO Clause: The moves Horn Drill, Sheer Cold, Guillotine and Fissure are banned.
Soul Dew Clause: Latias may not hold the item Soul Dew in an OU battle.
There are also more, but these are used in a normal standard battle.
Now to Summarize this guide.
2.1: Summary
To summarize, I hope you enjoy reading this guide. I really enjoyed writing it and hope you will profit from it. EV'ing isn't hard as it looks. Good Luck at battling everyone.
2.2: Credits and Helpful Links.
Credited to Raffprta/Raffy all rights reserved if you want to copy this guide ask me first and give credit to me.
Information mostly came from my own brain, Smogon.Com and Serebii.net.
I also will give credit to motobrokane who helped me with EVing and understanding competitive battling.
