Before hand you can pick what room and floor you want to update when you make a new character. Now he automatically says "i'll make a second floor" and then i pay it off, then hes like 'i'll expand your second floor!" ...

..no, i want a basement...

..no...i want a room on the left...

..no... i want a room on the right...

...no.. i want a back room...

I want one of every room so i can finally upgrade the outside of my house....

Where and when did he suddenly NOT give any choices to your own house?!

I think how it works is you upgrade the main room to the max, and then he builds the upper floor, and after that you will get to choose!

No, it normally lets you choose after you upgrade the first floor to the max. Now he is just focused on upgrading my 2nd floor period. It will be medium sized tomarrow.

I played 3 characters and know how this rolls by now.... and this isnt how its supposed to work.

Still not right. I managed to get my towns second characters exterior done only getting 1 level of everything spare the main floor. Tom nook shouldnt be so focused on just my 2nd floor right now.

I'll take pictures tomorrow if he does it again and prove i didnt have a choice in what i want constructed.

I've also played multiple characters and I didn't get to choose until after he first built the second floor. And I could upgrade my exteriors after getting just the left and right rooms

You have to get the smallest size second floor before you can add rooms to the side. Remember that he has two options when you talk to him: More Room, or More Space. If you want another room, then select More Room.

AC isn't a game that can be rushed. Perhaps you need to have played more before he lets you change the exterior.
