Well... it kind of dictates the forums but if you choose to play without it I'm pretty sure you'd be fine, especially since other AC websites function without currency.

That's kinda what keeps people coming here. Look at other AC websites and they're all way less active than TBT.

As someone who saw a forum slowly but completely dying due of the lack of interest of the admin, I thought much of the activity in TBT has more to do with the high commitment and dedication of staff members, alongside with a tolerable-enough user interface (UI). Although they couldn't totally avoid the side effects that come with how long the last main installment was released, the staff here succeeded on keeping the forums much more alive than every other Animal Crossing community.

Fun fact: Animal Crossing Community (ACC) also implemented the bell system a few years ago, but there's nothing we could do to use them. The diminishing involvement from the staff, along with the dated and clunky UI all signal that the community is slowly but surely disappearing.
