Hi everyone,

I just opened up my game from a several month hiatus. Of course, I lost my tan from the summer. I went to the island today, and upon a few hours of playing, I do not see any progress. Looking online, I'm finding a lot of conflicting information on how to properly get a tan in this game, and it's really frustrating!

Info I know for sure:
  • You can tan on the Island Resort AND Club Tortimer (online) any day of the year so long as the island is clear and not cloudy/raining/nighttime.
  • You can tan in your town during Tanning Season which is July 16th-Sept 15th.
  • Wearing hats, umbrellas and accessories that cover your face may block the sun and prevent tanning.
  • Your 3DS must be open while you are tanning

Unclear information:
  • There are 6(?) levels/shades of your tan
  • How long does it take to get to each level? I've heard between 15 minutes and an hour?
  • Do you have to wait until the next day to see results? I've heard yes and no.
  • Can you reach maximum tan in one day?
  • Which items, specifically, block tanning?
  • Do you have to be active, or can you idle your character for hours? I have heard both.

If anyone knows the answer to any of these questions for sure, that would be greatly appreciated.

Last time I checked, New Leaf is on the 3DS!

I believe all helmets; items that take up head and face positions; block tanning.

Sorry! Fixed.
Would that include flowers, bows and crowns? Small accessories?

Any clothing that uses the helmet icon in the inventory.

Maybe I wasn't clear. I meant that take up BOTH head and face positions. Sorry.

According to the Japanese guide there are more than 6 levels, of course I can't find the book right now but I remember it being closer to 10?
15 minutes should do it.
You will see the results the next day when you log in.
You can only go up or down one level per day.
I have never seen a definite list but any thing that would in real life block the sun seems to do it -- all masks, whole head covering, and hats with brims. If you're trying to get a tan I would just wear nothing on your head while you're tanning.
Pretty sure you can just stand there in the sun, but not sure.

Going to the island for 15 minutes a day will do the trick. But you have to make sure you're not wearing a hat for accessory that takes up space on your face. It also helps to wear a T-Shirt or something that reveals arms.

If you want to remain idle you can put on the wet suit and go in the water. If you stay on land the game will sense your inactivity and not tan you.
