Suggesting a theme for VIP/amiibo?

At one point when I was playing HHP yesterday, Lottie mentioned that I could now suggest a decorating theme to "VIP" clients. The way it was phrased seemed like she was talking about clients summoned via Amiibo. But when I used an Amiibo, I never got an option to suggest a theme. Does anyone know how this is supposed to work?

You can suggest themes to the regular villagers outside.

Ah thank you! All the villagers standing around yesterday didn't appeal to me so I didn't talk to any of them xD Now to try and peel my 4yo off the Switch so I can try this out >.>
