I have a question I just can't seem to find the answer to. I'm the mayor of my little town, but my wife has been playing off and on for the last year as a second character in my town. She's never been that into it, but finally decided she wants to start her own town. I know second characters can move to a new town, but is it possible to somehow start a new town with the same character? She doesn't want to lose this character, but wants her own town. Thanks for any thoughts on this.

It cannot be done. That would essentially be human cloning. You can transfer the items and whatnot, but she won't be in your town anymore.

I'm not trying to clone or duplicate. She wants to actually move the character out, but start her own town with that character rather than move into another already established town.

I can get another one, I just wanted to know if it was possible first. I don't want to drop $30 on a new cartridge just to find out her only option is to start with a fresh character. She told me she doesn't want to start a new town if she can't do it with her current character. Odd little predicament, I know.

You can't move a player character to a different town, you can transfer that characters stuff over, but that's it.

I don't quite understand I guess. When she logs in as her character, she has the move to different town option. I don't since I'm the mayor. So I'm guessing at this point it's either not actually possible to move her, or she can only move to an already established town. Is that right?

IGN page says you can:

By selecting the Move to Another Town option, Isabelle will ask that another 3ds with Animal Crossing be turned on nearby. (A physical or downloaded copy will do). After confirming that the player wants to move, she will begin searching for a suitable 3DS. At this time, the 3DS with the other Animal Crossing game that has no save file on it will have the option to "Move In" at the main menu. This 3DS will also begin searching for a compatible unit. Isabelle will remark that she has found (Insert name given to 3DS) and asks for confirmation that this is where the player would like to move. The new 3DS will notify that it has found a player wishing to move in, and also ask confirmation. When both sides have been confirmed, the player will be successfully transferred off of the old 3DS and onto the new 3DS, where the player will appear back on the train and be prompted to enter the new town name and become Mayor.

If you buy your wife her own cartridge, she can move her person to another town & become mayor of that town. I've never done it, so I have no clue what the steps are, but I would imagine the game will walk you through it when she attempts it. As far as I know, her house & whatever is in it & it's exterior will transfer over, along with items & bells.

I've transferred an existing player character from one town to another.Yes,you do need another cartridge and another 3DS.Just follow the instructions that were listed previously here on this thread.Everything in your house and I think in your pockets will transfer over to the new town.Stuff you have for sale in Re-tail or items you've left laying around outside will not transfer over. After your character is transferred,it's pretty much like a standard town reset.Your character will be the mayor of your new town.
