The same questions have been sweeping the world day after day. How was the universe created? Is there life on other planets? Why am I here? Today in the eighth year of the twenty-first century, there is a new question; How will you create the universe?

Back in 2000, Will Wright had began to test out various gameplay mechanics for another genre to be similar to The Sims. At first he named it SimEverything but eventually the title Spore came around. Five years later the game was shown GDC and was originally had no release date. Year after year the game continued to have major graphical changes until in 2007 where the game was hinted to have a first quarter release date for 2008. However in January of 2008, EA announced the game would be pushed back until the Fall and within two weeks after wards the game received it's official release date of September 7.

Spore a game that is about the process of life, starting out in a desolate universe. The story begins off with an asteroid crashing onto an unknown planet and lands in the ocean. once submerged tiny microbes will emerge from the new meteorite, bringing you to the beginning of the game.

The game comprises of five different ages, each which has gameplay that will relate back to what you have done in earlier stages but be completely different. For example the Cellular Phase, the first stage, is similar to Pacman and Flow, while the Tribal Phase was inspired by Populous. The goal of the Cell Phase is for you to progress out of the primordial ooze and essentially the ocean and make it to land. The next phase, the Creature Phase, is when you goal is the gain intelligence and mate with others in your species. This is done by socially interacting with other creatures as well as stalking your prey for food. Once you gain intelligence you will move onto the Tribal Phase, where you will need to conquer all of the other tribes, while capitalizing on all of the goals from the earlier stage. Once you are the te tribe, you will become a civilization and you will need to unify the planet either by conquering it or taking over the planet economically or religiously. As soon as you unify your planet you will be sent out into the cosmos to explore the universe where you can form your own planets and create colonies elsewhere.

Just a small part of this huge game.
One of the few things that makes Spore unique in it's own ways is the fact that each choice you make will affect you in later stages of the game. If you're carnivorous in the Cell Phase, you creature will receive different traits that will make your creature more aggressive in the Creature and eventually in the Space Phase. Each choice you make will be recorded in the game's own timeline, where you can view all of the times your creature has died, eaten, or advanced to the next phase along with all the powers you gain from your choices.

The timeline shows everything your creature has done.
Another thing that is unique about Spore is that you are able to create almost everything in the games many editors. From creatures to buildings to even the music of your cities, there's nothing you can't edit. In June, EA released the Spore Creature Creator, to give us a taste of the one of the game's editors. Two Million creations later, EA is shocked. Not only were they not expecting this huge burst of creatures they were surprised at how creative some of the creatures were. Everything you create will automatically be uploaded to the internet, to the Sporepedia, EA's server for Spore where you can download other player's creations or subscribe to tags so the game will automatically download them.

Overall, this game has Game of the Year written all over it. It's already received tons of awards from all of the major gaming networks as well as ton of fan support. With hours of enjoyment and creativity, who wouldn't want to buy this game? Just like The Sims did eight years ago, Spore will revolutionize the way both developers and gamers play games. I highly recommend everyone go out and buy this title next month and finally answer that one question; How will you create the universe?
