The Mispronunciation of Villager Names, ESPECIALLY/NAMELY names that come from other languages.

Pietro, Tia, Merengue, Soleil, Deli, Kabuki, Genji, Monique, etc etc etc...

this isn't a discourse thread and it isn't a huge deal but... it annoys me how FROM PERSONAL EXPERIENCE i've seen some people blatantly mispronounce them in English AND THEN ACT LIKE THE PROPER PRONUNCIATION IS WRONG LMAO, intentionally knowing it yk?

I don't include people who speak other languages because naturally they may have a slightly altered word or prefer the name in their language as a direct translation, and because English is more important than other languages to many, etc

but I wonder if anyone else feels the same way? this is mostly from personal experience

also on another note let's not forget the Tang-ee/Tangee discourse... I think I'll just go with the name in my language
i used to say tang ee but now... idk man. is she a tangerine? is she an orange? are they tangy? are they not? we will never know.

i don't see why it should be so bothersome. why would english speakers always know how to pronounce a word in another language or even know that the word is from another language to begin with? same goes for speakers of any language

because English speaking countries have a history of twisting words from other cultures, from first hand experience with my own culture, then make it look like the proper pronunciation is wrong. there's a lot of discourse over English speakers doing this actually

maybe it's more of a personal thing for me, but if I can't pronounce it i can just go to my culture's word rather than acting like that word is incorrect

Going from threads on here I know I pronounce some characters names wrong but I never say that my way is right* or the other way is wrong.

that's a good point! i think the issue mainly crops up in countries such as America, where English is shoved down so many people's throats. but then we jump into a whole mix of other issues so let's not touch that can of worms... but you bring up a good point! that's happened w my language as well

Words are invented and change over time, yes, however since they are needed for communication both the speaker and listener need to operate on the same or similar set of rules.

Sayings "well technically all pronunciations are wrong" is lazy and reductive.

From a philosophical standpoint nothing is real or correct other than your mind and math, but that doesn't really help anyone solve anything does it?

It doesn’t bother me, since most people just don’t know any better. This community is pretty diverse, and misunderstanding/mispronouncing words is a given when you have people from such varied backgrounds. I also see more people being embarrassed about their mispronunciation than acting high and mighty about it. To be honest, I’ve NEVER seen somebody act high and mighty about it here.

Given that the majority of us are simply typing the names, it doesn't really matter how individuals pronounce them.

I've been lucky enough to have formally studied three languages (French, German, and Spanish) and have informally learned at least the basic pronunciation rules in several other European and Asian languages on top of that so for me the challenge is often, "which rule do I follow?" I can usually figure out which one has been opted for just using common sense. Other people haven't been afforded that same luxury so if they mispronounce something I wouldn't hold it against them or be annoyed by it.

It was a minor mistake, but the meaning of my post is the same.

Saying no pronunciations is wrong is the same as saying all pronunciations are wrong because it removes the idea that pronunciation exists by applying an absolute property to all words.

No not really especially since I've meet people who's names are spelled the same but have different pronunciation. I just go with whatever the person says how their name is pronounced. Everyone takes from each other. Meet two girls with the name Monique and another with Tia both pronounced it differently. Some names are reused in different language and that name pronunciation changes with said language. Not to mention accents sometimes get in mix as well. Phonics can be a pain in the butt to remember because different languages have their different rules.

Ah,well...people mispronouncing Animal Crossing names doesn't bother me because I rarely actually speak in person to anyone that plays the game and in-game the language is Animalese so I don't hear it there either.I grew up in a Spanish speaking environment and I hear that language mispronounced all the time so I guess I got used to it.

I don't know man, I just pop the names in google translate and listen to how it's pronounced.

Just checked Soleil's and I've been pronouncing it wrong in English, been saying it with a Spanish tone. To be honest it sounds better in Spanish, so I might stick to that.
