I've seen a lot of people that are intimidated or overwhelmed with terraforming, so I wanted to share some of my tips!
I've found it's best to just jump right into it. As soon as you start, you'll get a lot more ideas as you progress. Inspiration is helpful, but try not to get locked into the idea that it has to be exactly like all the perfect towns you see online. You can create your own perfect island!
If you notice that some parts don't look right, like unnatural cliffs or water, it looks a whole lot better once there are decorations placed down.
Also, I've realized that adding more details with water has a nicer effect than details with cliffs. For my town, I pretty much left the cliffs where they were, and just built around them.
I like to work with one area at a time, and eventually I was able to develop a little theme. I posted some pictures, and you can see I incorporated some of the same ideas throughout my town, like stepping stones and little pillars.
I hope some of this helped, best advice is to just jump right in and and create as you go!
