So what IS the logic behind villagers picking up another villager’s personalized catchphrase?

So I had my Ruby say ‘Lapin’ as her catchphrase, which means bunny in French and is also sort of an in-joke with one of my best friends because she kept shouting that when we were playing Halo II multiplayer or something, so it’s cute and reminded me of good times.

Except now freakin’ Muffy started saying it too and it’s absolutely not as fun when she says it. It’s annoying, I want this to be Ruby’s special thing, not Muffy’s. Thankfully, unlike with New Leaf, resetting catchphrases and clothings is a bit more efficient in New Horizons since complaining to Isabelle actually does something, but why did they EVEN program in that villagers would copy each others’ catchphrases? Does anyone actually enjoy that?

Legitimately curious.

The same thing happened to me, I gave Fang a new catchphrase of “kid” bc to me he seems like an old man, but then Skye picked it up and it just feels so weird when she uses it. And to make matter worse Fang moved out like 2 days later so now Skye says “kid” and I don’t even have an old grandpa calling me kid anymore:/

I dont know, I actually hate it tho! I give everyone very tailored & thought out catchphrases, but now I don't even bother cause it spreads to EVERYONE on the island :[

I feel like in NH it spreads way more than NL? I don't remember it being this frequent or spreading to EVERYONE?

It hasn't bothered me too much - a lot of mine would say "your majesty" lol and then when they would ask me to change it I'd turn it to "my queen" or something like that. Since mine are more general, it hasn't bothered me, but I can see why that would be a pain if they're more personalized!

I feel the same way, it felt like the same day I gave Fang his new catchphrase Skye was also using it. In new leaf it felt like it would take way longer and was much more uncommon than now.

Honestly, I’ve been rocking a king outfit ever since I bought a royal crown several weeks ago so it’d probably make the most sense for me to do something similar, by now XD

I don't know if I'd say I enjoy it, as in the mechanic itself, but knowing that it happens I think it's funny when I see villagers copying other catchphrases. I guess it's because on the few occasions where I even do give specific catchphrases tailored to the villager (i.e. "latte," "cappuccino" and "macchiato" for Sandy because her house is a coffee shop) it's never a species-specific one and it doesn't bother me or seem all that unfitting when it spreads.

There was one time I gave Ursala "not my feet" because I literally could not think of anything else, and there was a balloon going by so I wanted to hurry. Then the whole island started saying it. I think it finally died with Rodney before Ursala asked for a new catchphrase. It was a small meme for a while, but tbh I'm glad it's over lol.

If it makes you feel better, when you're on high enough friendship with all your villagers, once they start asking you to give them a catchphrase, I think they stop exchanging them. They still spread them to others, but they themselves will keep the catchphrase you give them until they ask you for a new one. If my theory is correct, if you settle on ten permanent residents you can get to the point where they'll never exchange them anymore.

But I hate when new villagers exchange catchphrases a mile a minute, because it's like I don't even get to enjoy their old one for more than a day. I don't even remember what Spike's original catchphrase is, and barely Astrid's, because the minute they stepped outside for the first time it was lost.

Also, before I knew villagers catchphrases would spread, I had changed Clyde's to "I'm an idiot" because I really hated that darn horse. Then it spread and my sweet Fauna was saying it, so I had to end that one haha

In the future, I'm thinking of using Harry Potter spells as catchphrases.

Sometimes you can catch them in conversation spreading it to each other, back a while ago every other conversation hamlet was in was him spreading "ham ham" like its the gospel or something 😒

Now i give them all pretty neutral phrases like star symbols lol

It feels like it spreads too fast, doesnt it? I dont mind it that much and i am glad that they at least dont copy each others clothes this time around, or maybe they can but it didnt happen to me yet.

I am curious as you! maybe they wanna give you a representation of how slang words might start spreading out or something like that XD

u know how when words like "bruh" and "oop" get popular and is found in everyone's vocabulary for a long while? catchphrases r like that but acnh. it kinda sucks that it's like that bc i want my buddy Goose to say dude and be the surfer boy of his chicken dreams but i can't blame everyone else for also wanting to be a surfer boy

I remember NL’s process being basically the same as it is in NH. Is it worse than I remember?

I'm just happy they don't swap default catchphrases anymore...though if everybody started staying glitter I'd probably be more amused than annoyed.

I had Dobie's catchphrase be "I do declare" which is funny, for Dobie. But now half of my villagers are saying it and I hate it, I hate it so much, why did Nintendo do this

Lolll I made Ed say the catchphrase croissant and so far Flora and Julian picked it up AHAHAHAHA I don't have Flora anymore tho but now Julian is saying croissant as well which is kinda annoying but pretty funny as well

I've only changed 2 so far. Lionel says "dear heart" and Dobie says "my girl". If others start using them, I'm hotfooting it to Isabelle.
