So something weird happened...

So I was just letting someone else come in to my town, and then somebody else came, and we weren't even through the save process before I got the resetti thingy. It had not finished saving, yet the t-shirt this person left before another person came is still here. Even though, the save thingy had not finished.

What happened?

Yes but why did the tshirt save in my game?

There are there are 9 circles to the save cycle. Lets say there are 4 since 5 of them are listed "moving". Moving is gonna be the process of saving, while there is multi cloned and complete save. Your game went over the "Cloned" phase meaning it saved before you reset. If you did it any earlier it would have not saved or either got cloned. Any later then yes it got saved. When I came the game probably crashed after the clone cycle. Heres a picture.

That's happened to me before. Does the other person have the item too? If so, you just accidentally cloned it. It happened to me once when someone was visiting my town for a trade and the game glitched as that person was leaving.

What probably happened was that there was a connection error. That gives you the resetti error because the game saved when you open the gates and then it saves again when the other person leaves.
