Is it just my bad luck or something or are Snooty and Cranky villagers hard to find on Mystery Tours? I come across Normal, Peppy, Lazy and Jocks a lot but rarely do I come across snooty or cranky. I got Mathilda on an island today after using at least 8 tickets and she's the first snooty I came across. The other day, I got Apollo after using 10 tickets and he was the first cranky I came across.

Does this happen to anyone else or it just me? I also rarely come cross smug and sisterly villagers but they appear more than Snooty and Cranky.

i'm pretty sure that the personality types you find more frequently relate to how many of them you have on your island. if you have a ton of snooties and crankies on your island, you will run into them less. i don't know for sure but this is what i think.

But that's the thing, I didn't have any Snooty or Cranky villagers on my island before getting Apollo the other day.

That's a good theory though and it would make sense to prevent islands from being overrun with one personality type.

Well, if you find a good cranky or snooty, particularly one that isn't very much liked by the fandom, I think you should take them unless you already have a planned list. The same for the campsite.
I believe this algorithm affects both the campsite and mystery islands.

I don't have a planned list of villagers I want. I just like them having a variety of personalities, other than that, I don't really care all that much about who is only island (although I do think some villagers are ugly and I don't want them on my island but if they happen to show up, I wouldn't care all that much since they won't be permanent anyways).

It's purely luck. The only specific element the game rolls for is species. What personality they are is up to random chance.

Hmm, I didn't know that. Well looks the Cranky and the Snooty hunting will be eating up my NMT when I do hunt for them. It's interesting how it's RNG but I rarely come across those types. Every species I come across are different but personality are almost always the same 4 that I previously mentioned, so with that being said, it really does make sense that the personality types are RNG.

On my villager hunt today the first 2 I found were cranky villagers (Boyd and Spike). I was looking for either a smug or peppy with the music hobby. I eventually found Lionel and invited him.

It’s purely luck but from my personal experience, I rarely run into snooties and uchis on mystery tours. This is why the personality distribution in my island is skewed. I’m so scared of ending up with villagers I don’t like that I just take whoever is okay in the mystery tours regardless of personality types.

It’s random, and mystery islands are unaffected by whether you have a certain villager type on your island. Side note that finding a snooty or cranky after 8 or 10 tickets seems pretty fast (there are 8 personalities, after all). On one of my recent island hopping trips i was in 22 tickets before I found a normal and 43 before I found an uchi.

But with randomness, you aren’t going to see the same personalities a predictable amount of times unless you visit enough islands that the statistical probabilities start becoming observable.

i haven’t calculated what the probability for each personality type is, but also keep in mind that since the island rolls for species first, the chances of finding a certain personality are probably not all even. I don’t know how the exact math breaks down, but the chance is probably not 1/8, just like the odds of finding a specific villager is not 1/391 (it’s lower, especially for any villager who is in a species with a lot of members, like cats or rabbits). I have a feeling the uchi personality is the most ‘rare’ because there are the least members in that type.

Our brains love to find what they think are patterns, so once you have the idea in your mind that you never see snooties or crankies, you would be primed to see examples of that happening. - for example, I always spend a t least some time during my island hopping convinced I am getting ‘only’ crankies (one of my least favorite personalities). But when I look back on the lists I make for my island hopping, there are always proportionally less crankies then I thought. (one time I did see 4 crankies out of the first 10 islands I visited - 10 islands is not a statistically significant sample size, but it did a good job of making me think i was cursed)

sorry if this is less than coherent, I am writing at 3am in my time

I know there are people on here who can explain the randomness better than I can. But basically my own rule of thumb is that when it seems most unrandom - seeing the same villager twice, not seeing even numbers of all personalities or species, then that probably means it is actually fairly random, cause human brains are garbage at recognizing randomness, and love finding patterns.

TL;DR: Yes mystery island villager spawning is random.

Ahhh I just googled it after reading this. I had no idea they roll for species when I was doing my Cyd search. The whole "seeing Octopus everywhere" (which was my experience early game) makes total sense now. I was quite annoyed that out of 100 tickets trying to look for Cyd, I only found 1 elephant (Tucker) so I eventually gave up. I had Dizzy living on the island at the time. But at the same time, I had Hamphrey living on my island and I came across Graham three times in a row. The whole NM hunting thing just feels too much against your favour and bores me to death, so I never attempted it again after that :p

I think it can seem harder when we are looking for something in particular; it feels like it's taking forever. The first time I was looking for a Snooty, I finally got the Snooty on the 11th try. This time I was hoping for Raymond (but only had 4 NMT, LOL) but I got Judy on my last ticket.

Lol I can relate, I rarely find snooties. It really is just rng I suppose! I get normals and peppies the most I would say.
