Should I link my NNID's?

I don't think you can link two already existing NNIDs. I only have experience with using a single NNID on both the 3DS and Wii U. Someone might prove me wrong in a moment though.

An advantage of doing it would be that you can add money from an eShop card and have the money accessible and able to be used on either system.

I don't want to abandon one but if I have to then OK but does logging out of one and signing in the other system's NNID onto that one affect friends/data/play coins/etc.?

Unfortunately, I have no idea about what would happen with data and play coins. I would assume the Friends are tied to the system rather than the ID, but again, don't know.

I'll leave it to others to clear up any mistakes I may have made. Hopefully someone knows about the friend stuff.

As far as I know, an NNID keeps track of both 3DS and Wii U eShop data (downloaded games and DLC, settings) and NNID settings.
Everything else on 3DS will be left untouched when you unlink your NNID. This includes 3DS Friend List, because they rely on Friend Codes instead of NNID.

NNIDs cannot be linked. I know this because I contacted Nintendo about it a while ago.

The best thing to do would be to keep the same NNID that's already on the 3DS, because the 3DS can only handle one NNID at a time.

The WiiU will be able to store more than one, so you can have the two different NNIDs on there and not lose any software licenses (like downloaded games or DLC add-ons). Any NNID will be able to use a software license that another NNID has, so long as they're both on the same WiiU.

I'm not sure what will happen if you remove the NNID that originally purchased the licenses, which is why I haven't removed the first WiiU NNID I made.

Keep in mind that each NNID on a WiiU will have its own save files, so if you have some games that you're further along in, you'll need to do some things over.

I would assume you can't use them if the original user isn't on there.

It's how it works with other platforms (Sony/Xbox/Steam). It would be incredibly easy to get free games otherwise.

True. If you need to transfer one NNID into another WiiU, it has to be aided by Nintendo directly, and you have to go through a sort of test procedure to ensure you are or at one point owned both WiiUs, and then the WiiU you are transferring the NNID FROM will lose the access to the licenses being transferred.

I unwittingly made my NNID on my brother's WiiU, found out I couldn't just move it to my own new WiiU, and then made a second NNID because of this. However, I eventually contacted Nintendo because of something I'd read online. Because we have both WiiUs in the same house, we had all the information they ask for readily available, and were able to transfer my NNID to my WiiU, while keeping his in tact. My previous NNID also stayed in tact, so I didn't lose any of the licenses I'd bought.

Without Nintendo's help, moving one NNID to another WiiU would require a transfer of the entire system, including moving all the NNIDs from the "old" WiiU to the "new", and overwriting the current data.
