I've had my town for a few months now, and I've been putting off building a police station. I don't know if there's really any benefit to having one (also idk where to put it aha)

Am I missing out much if I don't build one?

Well if you want to honestly
It's the lost and found
Plus if you have Phineas or other characters like him that roams
You can ask them and they tell you that there somewhere around

Nah. I haven't built it either, you can buy the rare items from other players.

i just don't like either design, and i kinda feel like i don't really have a spot for it...
otherwise i probably would build it to get that sweet sweet sloppy set

but idk i think it's probably not worth it if i'm gonna be unhappy with it

I always do even though I say I'm not going to. I just feel like the villagers feel safer. And yes, I know how silly that sounds :)

I have a police station in two of my towns (one of them has been going since the game was released and had the station built pretty quickly) and have never had a piece of the sloppy set turn up :(

Unlike some PWPs ( video screen, drilling rig, parabolic antenna I'm looking at you) at least the police station makes sense. I for one welcome the police station in any of my towns.

Same here!
But I find it useful: Booker/Cooper tells you who is in town & I sometimes get bits, usually plant bags/clothes - but I have also got tricky pitfalls (black & if you bury give a smaller star). Most days get nothing in L&F.

Edit: I've got sloppy items from inside a villagers house - they offered when asked if I wanted to buy something (asked 500 bells) & from R-Tail flea market - I always leave the back 4 spaces open, sometimes more - in the hope of...something.

I feel like it makes the town fuller with more important things, maybe more developed in a way. It shows if someone special is in your town, and free stuff!

It looks quite nice and takes up some empty space. It also tells you if something is happening like Gracie in town or something ^^
It's pretty useful, I would suggest it.

I would suggest it even though I don't care for either design. If you ever in the future happen to store stuff in your plaza or elsewhere in your town and either Redd's tent or anything else is placed in the plaza over top of such items or a villager moves on top of items that are not flowers you can recover them in the lost and found. I know this isn't most people. I however just lost a bunch of assessed fossils that the edge of Chip's tent took out(it's bigger then Redd's). Since I don't have the police station yet in that town I can't get them back. No, I personally don't need them but I have them there specifically to help out others. They are free and one fossil can help another complete their museum.
I am kinda upset about it because I know for a fact that I had two fossils that a friend needs to complete her museum and they are tragically gone now.
Also, they can help towards completing your catalog if you happen to need a few items that have not shone up in the stores it can be very helpful. Lastly being able find out who is town, especially if you have multiple guests like Phineas and Katie together. This extremely helpful because you won't be able to actually find Phineas until you take care of Katie. You usually have to take her to another town and then you will find Phineas walking around afterwards. Katie is like the plaque to me lol.

I would. If you're the kind of person who leaves items everywhere, and accidentally left some in town square only to log in to see that Redd/Isabelle/Katrina has crushed your precious ITEMS OH NO! You can go to the police station, and they should be in the lost and found, iirc. I think the police station is also the only place where you can find the elusive Tricky Pitfall seeds. They're black and yellow versions of pitfall seeds, that when buried, have a much tinier star/x/crack and are wayyyyy great for pranking other players. They're not easy to come by. I've been playing since the game released, and only just found a Tricky Pitfall seed this year. Just one. My one and only seed. I keep it more as a collectible, rather than use it.

I was reluctant at first and put it off for a long time but, once I got my first Classic Police Station, I will build one every time. I like the mild comedy when dealing with Booker and it's handy for finding out who is in town, saving a tour of the beach if I haven't seen Gulliver for a while. Of course, if you have to walk through the Plaza on your way to the station, some of that value is lost. Many thanks to the previous posters who have given me an education on its other values.

I felt the same way when I got it unlocked but decided to pick one and went with the classic one. Like the others mentioned, I feel like it completes the town. I like having Booker there as an extra npc I can talk to. He's cute and funny. There's always free stuff like stationary, if I'm too lazy to go to the shops, and it's good to know when Gulliver is on the beach as I never head down there much.

I absolutely recommend it. It's nice to know if a camper is there, or a special NPC you may not have noticed walking around. Plus, it makes the town feel more complete!

It offers lost & found and you can find out if Gulliver is on the beach or whatever. That's about it, apart from looks and the fact that you can get Booker!! ...or Copper.

I thought the lost and found would save me traipsing all over town looking for the property's owner but, alas...not to be.
