Bells

I've never done the stock-market approach on making bells and I wonder how effective it is for you guys. For example, about how much work do you put into selling turnips and how many bells do you make on average. Is it even that sufficient or sustainable? I heard you can actually make a lot less than you've bargained for.

The "risk" and "loss" of the stock market is basically a bunch of bullcrap if you know where to find good prices. And actually, we have a thread for this here, it's stickied somewhere on ACNL Online. And someone will usually make a more organized thread just for themselves on that occasion if they have a good price. 1m can bloom into 12m in literally under an hour if you have a good price ready at hand. It's wayyyy more than sufficient and you can pretty much do it as long as you have at least 1m.

<tl;dr> Don't rely on your own prices. Other towns = Zero risk $$$$$. 1m investment is usually sufficient.

It's not that risky! In my opinion, the biggest risk is forgetting and time travelling back (which rots your turnips).

If you can connect to other towns, visit the threads in the Train Station section regularly. There's always someone who has a good price in their town, so you can go there and sell your turnips if you're not getting any good prices in yours.

If you're playing alone, it's more difficult, but it's still possible to make money that way. Check Re-Tail twice a day, in the morning and in the afternoon. You'll get two different prices that way. I don't know how much prices can fluctuate over the week, though I think someone made a graph about it once, but usually you can sell them for a price that will at least cover the bells you invested in your turnips.

Don't forget that turnips are sold by the dozen, so you need to divide the price you paid for them by six. The prices in Re-Tail are for individual turnips. If the price per turnip in Re-Tail is higher than the amount you gave Joan for each one, you'll make a profit. If it's much higher, you'll make even more bells.
