I'm sorry if you find this disruptive, but I just have to vent about this and let off some steam.
From my own observation, retro gamers are masochistic people that like to be frustrated to the point of even excessive swearing, and wants to pull in other gamers with them, even if they don't prefer that type of stuff. In addition, they seem to have this idea that "since I felt this way during my time, YOU need to too". They also seem to feel that a game should be one that not anyone can beat and no game should be easy at all.
Also, they seem to have a irrational hatred for stuff like the Super Guide and people using it, FOR THE REASON IT WAS MADE IN THE FIRST PLACE!? Like, is there problem with balancing a games difficulty at least once so anyone can play it or beat it? It is wrong to help those who does not prefer to indure ridiculous amounts of frustration like some people?
In addition, whenever I play and old game and I blame the physics or controls on my deaths (when it actually is the physics and controls) or complain about the difficulty of one level, I get told stuff like "you must not be used to the difficulty of old games" or "you just suck at the game".
In addition, I can't stand another word of this handholding stuff. What if some people actually prefer that? Not everyone just wants to be thrown into a game without direction or reminders along the way.
Also, how is something as simple as a tutorial or controls screen handholding? What, do you want to be thrown in with absolutely no idea on what to do or how to even control your guy? Is it fair to assume "everyone knows how to play" and just drop you right in from the get go?
Think of it in a real world situation. What if someone gave you a math test and didn't even consider to teach you how to do the the math first? You most likely would fail the test, unless you already know or remember the math. However, what if you don't. Then you are stuck with figuring it out yourself going through several failed tests until you get the formula down. If they taught you how to do the math, you would most likely pass on the first or couple attempts. Would that be fair to just assume that everyone knows how to do the math and not even consider those who may have forgotten or don't know?
Also, they seem to want to crave for this attention from other people because they really like to mention stuff like "bragging rights", or that "not everyone" can do what they did. That is one of the most egotistic mentalities I have ever seen in my life. Why should something be tailored just to fulfil you and your ego or vanity? To add, bragging is already egotistic in itself and only shows insecurity to begin with in my opinion.
I think this quote from another forum shows what I am talking about...
Depravity? Do you even know what this means? This is what I mean by this masochistic thing, Also, why would you want kids to feel depravity too? Why should they have to go into a dangerous jungle just because you did as a kid?
With that logic, because your generation was neglected, beaten and harassed means that another generation needs to indure the same thing.
So you are happy that some people can't playthrough the game and your generation can. This is what I mean by egotism and craving for attention. And like I said, not everyone likes feeling that way and wanting to pull on board with something you and your personal generation prefers is ridiculous.
Also, you are happy with a feature that is meant to help some people and prevent frustration that some people may not want to indure?
To add, these people really like to underestimate younger gamers. Many of them can indure difficulty, but they usually indure it through another methods other than swearing (because parents don't allow them). The methods are a bit more violent and loud, and my concern parents or you may look at as whinny (and is part of the reason why the media looks at video games so negatively) but it is really just to let off some steam from frustration. Take my word for it, I used to do it when I was little.
Growing up, I indured much difficulty and frustration from games and got very far and even beaten some of them for my age, I was very determined (and I still am that way as gamer) but I would never pull everyone on board with me just because I indured it and say they should too. The ones I didn't finish was mostly because I started to become bored of the game because I couldn't progress any further because I didn't know what to do next, not really because of difficulty. If I already beat the game and 100% it, it was because I didn't know you could or didn't find any interest in doing so.
Okay, I am done.

And as for the little kids who are playing this, it is about time they learn the depravity that gamers from the 80s felt, of not being able to beat every game they own.* It is about time that this spoiled super guide generation learns how to survive in the jungle from which young gamers have been far too removed for too long.

*It's not a game that a five year old could get through the main story, or a ten year old could ever hope to 100%.* I enjoy the rush of knowing I could die at any moment, even with a great deal of skill brought to the table.* They even did away with the annoying Super Guide!
