Hi! I'm restarting my town (I'm currently map resetting) and I need some advice. cx Such as, what good maps look like (placement of buildings), how do get started earning bells (I really need bells xD), etc. Thank you for all your help! If you want, you can come see my new town once I get it. :)

i think mostly try and get retail near your dock if you're going to be selling beetles from the island often

As far as the map, some people like having retail close to the train station for trades, some people prefer it close to the dock for beetle hunting. It depends on what you do more often, I guess.

I personally like having my town hall and event plaza close to each other. Just because it makes sense that official town-business stuff should all be contained in the same general area.

Also take note of where in the river would be most convenient/efficient locations for additional bridges, and don't block that area with your mayor's house.

Villager house placement is less important, because presumably you'll be moving some out/some new ones in fairly early on, and you can always plot reset villager houses, but I pay more attention to permanent buildings because it really does have an effect on gameplay.. especially retail.

And try to visualize where you'll be wanting big permanent PWPs, like the cafe and the police station and campsite... in my main town I planned horribly, and I don't even have room for the police station at all unless I delete my second character or crowd it in somewhere awful. So just be mindful of those kinds of things.

Ok. Thank you all for the great advice! <3

depends on how you want it set up, i have my town hall, my retail and my cafe all placed really close together. and my police station isn't too far away.

my villager houses are set up in bunches of twos that are all repetitively close to each other, minus whitney + coco up top.
and marshal + muffy far bottom left. : )

this left me a nice chuck of untouched space that i've made forest type things in instead having my paths run through all of my town. ( only goes through about 75% : )

i say once you get the villagers you want in places you want- thats when you should start building pwps and doing your paths! that's the best way in my opinion. because when you start before- you have people ruin path ideas and pwp locations.

if you need help with bells, i agree on the sell your btb for it- i'll give you 20mil per 100 btb ^^

Hi there! I recently reset like you, and I'm so happy that I did!

First of all, I really like the southern-facing waterfalls, because then you can put a bridge right near the very end! It's so adorable! But that is really just my preference. I'd definately look for a town with lots of space, and fewer ponds. (Mine only has two.. yay!) Also, my Retail is pretty close to the train station, so its easy for trades, but if you want to go bug hunting its easier to have one by the dock. I also really liked this river layout. It's simple and it's not too long!

In the end, I just spent some time running around, making sure there were annoying rocks, and checking to make sure the fruit was apples! (They were!)

Good luck finding an awesome town!

I'm going to restart later today/early tomorrow, so I'll just start brainstorming some stuff.

Top Priority:

- Town Name: DO NOT START MAP RESETTING UNTIL YOU HAVE DECIDED ON A TOWN NAME. Mayor name too, I guess. Say this out loud a couple times to make sure you remember. I always forget.

- Town Hall: If you want to keep the town hall's original design, you should definitely reset if you get a yellow one. The other colours are all pretty decent and interchangeable, and it really doesn't matter which one you get. Black and green are both neutral colours and will fit well with everything, and although blue is not, it's dark enough to not be a problem. Also, nobody really cares about this but the desk inside the green town hall is green. It's not as bad as it sounds though, so reset only if the exterior is yellow.

- Town Tree Location: The town tree is the first thing anyone will see when they visit your dream town, so it has to look amazing. Most people like to like it with bushes and trees, but you can't do that if it's close to the edge of town. You will either a) literally not be able to because it's that close or b) be able to, but it'll look gross because you also have a line of trees/bushes bordering the railroad. A central tree is best for map aesthetics, but really anywhere is fine.

- Good Mayor Location: Out of all the buildings, your mayor's house is the most important to place in a good spot. Most maps have a private or semi-private area to put a house, so you will usually (BUT NOT ALWAYS) want to put it there. If a villager's house or rock is blocking the ideal spot, you should probably reset. Yes they're removable and yes you can put a different human resident's house there, but it probably won't be as good because a) you probably want your mayors house by itself and the other two together (fourth doesn't exist) and b) your mayors house is most important anyways. You don't necessarily have to reset though.

Lower Priority:

- Beach Ramps: Horizontal beach ramps are pretty, while vertical ramps are gross. It's usually not worth resetting over, but it's still something to consider if you're unsure whether or not to keep a decent-but-not-great looking town. It's less bad if the vertical ramp is on the side beach though.

- Grass Shape: Circle and square grass don't look as good as triangle grass because they're larger, but they're still okay. This is more of a problem if you want a natural town, since if your town is going to be more developed barely any grass will be poking out. Also iirc snow shapes are random and not related to grass shapes so that can be considered your second chance I guess.

- Town Fruit: Perfect apples are beautiful, cherries and peaches (and pear but no one likes them) are okay and oranges are gross. Having apples is great and awesome, but you're going to have more than one kind of fruit in your town anyways so it doesn't matter that much if you don't have them. Having oranges is pretty annoying though, since you won't have any perfect fruit at all. :(

- Train Station: The blue train station is disgusting compared to the other ones. You can considering resetting if you get and plan to keep it, but you probably shouldn't.

Who Cares:

- Initial Villagers: The next three move-ins are the best opportunities you will ever have to get the villagers you want (and in the right location, if you care about that). If you have at least one dreamie of each personality type, you will already be guaranteed three within a week, so having an extra one or two isn't too big a deal. There's also tons of cycling threads. DO NOT reset over this. Just don't, okay?

- Left/Right Beach: Determines the museum and bench's location on Main Street too btw. But seriously this is the worst thing ever to reset over.

Hey! I just reset (because of the demon sheep named Frita that was a bday brat in my bday, we have the same bdays) and have some tips you can follow!

-Overall, try to get a map yu can work with. If you can't work with it, you can't keep it.
-What beaches do you prefer? Private beaches? Being able to access all the beach? Don't really care? If you want private beaches, how big of one?
-Plaza placing. I find this one to be important. If the plaza is by a cliff, or the train station, I can't keep it. Try to think of where you want your plaza.
-Length of river. Long? Short? Medium? Try looking until you find a good river.

If you want to see my map, I'll get a picture of it (this is why Miiverse is helpful).
(I'll edit the picture in)

I'd like to point out that this SUPER, very much depends on your personal play style and what you think looks best. I mean I'm sure you already know that... but just ignore them if someone says your town layout is ugly when you really like it. It only depends on what you want from it. There is no "ideal map" since it's different for everyone.

Personally, I avoid maps with any sort of narrow strips of land where I know landscaping will be difficult. I also do not like plazas smacked into the middle of town, even though most people seem to (don't know how to explain this, but when your tree gets big enough and you're walking behind it, it doesn't appear at first then when it suddenly does appear it just sort of *pops* up and covers your whole screen. It looks really dumb to me so I avoid having a plaza in any place where I'll have to regularly walk behind the tree lol. It also takes up a ton of space in the middle). Another thing I usually look for is a short river, because long ones just take up too much room for me. I also like green or brown trains stations. c:

Re-Tail near the train station is good if you want to sell villagers (using Re-Tail method), or if you want to invite others over for turnip trading. Re-Tail near the dock is good if you want to farm bugs/fish from the island for profit. The other buildings in town don't really matter except for your personal preference.

Good luck, I hope everything goes well and you find a nice map! ^^

triangle grass is best grass and make sure buildings are grouped the way you want them
other than that, i don't really consider town layout a BIG, BIG deal when you're restarting, but if you're going for a certain type of town, just pay mind to the permanent features (retail, train station, town hall, river, etc) and worry about the rest later

Bells: unlock the island and collect bugs at night time; sell your villagers if you don't want them (when they're moving out); offer goods and services like hybrid breeding and art if you're good at it... idk, that's all i really do to earn bells. and invest in turnips.

Think of how you're going to theme your town and make sure the map you pick can cater to your needs. I wouldn't pick a really long river because it will take up most of your space.
Personally, I prefer square/circle grass, green train station, but honestly it's up to what you like. Your town won't be better because you have a red train station or whatever.
If you're going to make money via beetle catching, have your Re-Tail closer to the docks as it's easier to run back and forth.
Starting villagers don't matter that much because they can all move out pretty quickly, but usually I only accept a town if it has at least one villager I like.
Make sure you're completely happy with what you've got. You don't want to go ahead with something and then regret it a month later because you would've wasted your time. Good luck with your new town.

I just want to say that there are people who actually do like oranges and understand why perfect oranges look the way they do. The Animal Crossing art team designed that perfect orange the way they wanted, and it's beautiful regardless of what others might say. if you get a great town map with oranges, it's not the end of the world.

This may not apply to everyone but I for the beaches..the small beaches without access annoy me. Some people enjoy having them and refer to them as special private beaches for themselves, accessed by a wetsuit..but to me it's a pointless area on the map. So basically, I prefer two equally long beaches or at least two beaches that are decent in length. Secondly, the re-tail center should be close to the beach. If you decide to sell shells or bugs/fish/etc from the island, it'll be quicker to go back and forth to sell. Also..for the shape, everyone has their own tastes. For example, my land shape is basically a perfect square split in half. I thought it was the perfect map at first since it looked like there was so much space and seemed perfect..but in reality, with tree placements, paths and flowers..it's difficult to find a decent place to put public projects without it all looking crammed together. What I mean is it seems big on the map and looks like a lot could fit, but there are no "special" areas and behind the map..it's just really crowded. This is just from my experience though, so I wish I could have chosen a weirdly shaped map. The weird maps are good in a way because if you got small extra pieces of land that have their own "space" with an entrance..ah it's hard to explain. It's basically just this random piece of land hanging off the map as if it were a hook. Those are nice because you can put special things in there, such as the cafe, mayor's house, bus stop, etc. As for the town fruit, it honestly doesn't matter what your town fruit is from my opinion. I got peaches which is what I wanted, but then I started collecting all the fruits, now I got groups of all the different fruits in my town. Apples, oranges, durians, lychees, I got it all. But then I got so much of each fruit and planted them..I completely forgot what my native fruit was, so you can basically just plant a bunch of any other fruit you wanted and not have to waste a perfect map. Hope this helped

Good building placements in my opinion is Re-Tail near beach, because if you want easy bells you can go to the island and beetle farm/shark hunt (Catching rare beetles on palm trees and sharks after 7Pm) and the Re-tail wont be to far from the dock.

Town Hall can be placed any where for me.

Plaza straight down from the station c: so it makes landscaping easy

Cafe can be placed anywhere depending on how you want you town to look (same goes for Police Station, I prefer with the Classic Police Station)

Save up your un-orderables so you can sell them for bells on here! Thats how I ended up with a lot of bells, also save a lot of money because you will occasionally get a letter from HHA saying that you earned 99k bells in interest depending on how many bells are in your ABD.
