buy something like a dresser or something that opens, those are the best (and safest) ways to store things.

You can also store an additional 10 items in unsent letters as attached presents in your letter inventory.

and if you're like, insane about keeping something... you can put it in a letter you want to keep, and put it in your mail box at the town hall.
