So a villager in my town is moving out tomorrow (they're in boxes and headed to another town at the moment), and I was just wondering if anyone knew if there was a chance that a random new villager could move in the following day?

You can have a max of 10 villagers at once and no one will randomly move in until you get down to 8.
If you have 9 villagers, you will get new ones only if
1) you invite a villager from your campsite or who was in boxes in another town
2) voided villagers from other towns can be randomly chosen to move in when a)you streetpass someone who has or b)visit another town

Can a voided villager move in immediately on the following day from a 10th villager moving out?
I think so but I'm not sure. Whenever I'm down to 9 villagers, I just use a trick similar to plot reset to make sure they don't. I start as a new character on that day, check carefully for a plot, and if there isn't one I just save the game as that character and delete it later.
