Question about turnips

Last Sunday I bought some turnips from Joan again and instead of leaving them in my pockets where they'd be taking up precious inventory space, I decided to store them at my house in my blue chest of drawers (can't remember the proper name for that item) til the buying price was good enough to sell them at ReTail. But anyway, when I went to get them out of the chest of drawers on Weds I found that they had spoiled. . Was I just unlucky or does this generally tend to happen if you store turnips in a chest of drawers/similar?

they expire if you time travel or have them longer than seven days. you can store them however.

I time traveled by a few hours one time and my turnips were spoiled.
