Puzzle League: (Lvl. 1 ) CONTROLS/How Do I switch my "block target"?

Help!? Not sure if it's my DS or if I can't figure out the controls! (I know it's 2018, but I didn't get my hands on this beautiful game finally until a few months ago and-) I've just obtained a nintendo ds and Wii console system(s) in the AC:NL game and it's my first time trying to play the ds game "Puzzle League", I'm on level one with Tortimer and my little 1x2 "target" area that highlights the fruit squares are horizontal- HOW DO I GET THEM VERTICAL? I can't figure it out for the life of me, I've pressed every button, it's so frustrating, I get so close but can't even beat level 1 without figuring this out. Or is it my DS buttons? Help!

I don't think you can get it vertical. I think if you scan in certain amiibos they have different "abilities", but not sure what those would be. It's definitely possible to beat both levels of Story Mode without amiibo, since I've done it myself. It just takes some getting used to.
