Immersion last year sued Sony for infringing on its patents. Immersion claims that it owns the technology that powers the rumble in Sony's Dual Shock controllers. It also sued Microsoft for its rumble features in the Xbox, but the boys from Redmond settled out of court.

Sony fought on, and lost a case last year. However, it's been allowed to continue selling the PS2 pending appeal. If the latest reports are verified, it's lost that appeal today.

This means that Sony not only has to pony up and awful lot of cash to Immersion Technologies, but it has to stop infringing on the patent - that means stop selling kit which includes Dual Shock technology, and that means pulling the PS2 off the shelf.

Commentators are wondering if this case is the reason for the PS3 controller redesign that we've seen - it's possible the horrendous boomerang monstrosity doesn't infringe on patents.

Interestingly, Immersion is owned in part by Nintendo. The next-generation battle just took another twist...

This could be really bad for Sony and could further push back the PS3's launch, and I mean way back.

If these reports are true, then pulling the PS2 off the market is a huge blow against Sony. With PS2 currently being Sony's strongseller in the home console markets, the company with lose a HUGE proportion of its profits, as well as having to pay a large sum to Immersion. Also there had been rumours of Sony developing a Revmote style controller for use with outcoming PS2 titles. I guess losing the patent won't stop Sony from retailing the device (if it existed), but if the PS2 is already off the market...

To finish up, the long awaited fanboy boasting, seeing as Immersion is partly owned by Nintendo... NINTENDOWNED!

Wow. People will proably not buy PS3 becasue of a bigger wait but I heard worldwide shipping is November 2006.

They copied practically everything Nintendo did.

As much as I want Nintendo to win this next-gen race, I'm afraid this delay will be very bad for the industry. Sales will go down, especially considering Sony's loss in that lawsuit... Now, they can't sell PS2's, Dualshock controllers, certain games, including Vice City and Final Fantasy X, and now the only thing they have left on shelves is the PSP. They delayed it because of the price, mostly, not because of the fact that the Revo is going to launch sometime then. Of course, Iwata has said that they'll release the Revolution before Thanksgiving, so maybe Sony's going to launch their system last.

With recent announcments that the PlayStation 3 is to have a global launch in November 2006, Nintendo needs to get some things straight, and either launch before the PS3, or close to it and knock it out completely with a solid launch-up and a good ad compaign. From what I gather, the Revo isn't launching near the PS3, but before Thanksgiving, and I think that it wouldn't be completely unreasonable to expect a September launch.

What Nintendo needs to do is give us a substantial amount of info at GDC, since we just got a lot from Sony, and people usually get hyped all over again if there's any kind of new info. In Nintendo's case, they need to unveil a lot of info... They still need to save the best for E3, but at least a video is needed... Of course, unless the last secret has to do with anything visual, and a video would give everything away. Although, we have seen Metroid Prime 3 running on a Gamecube, and they could do the same with any currently in-development Revolution game, such as Super Smash Bros. Revolution.

If people see a video, they'll start hyping the Revo again... We haven't had a good chunk of info for a while now, and speculating has gotten pointless and annoying. If we have new info, we can start speculating on a new topic, and the speculation won't be baseless, as most of it is right now. How many times have we heard the phrase "3D projection" when talking about the Revo? Countless times. How many times have we seen Nintendo talk about it? I'd say around... zero. At least, in the direct sense... They've always hinted on stuff...

But we haven't had a good piece of info in a long time, and that's exactly what we need at GDC. Sony's got some announcments to make, and I don't think they reckon on Nintendo ruining GDC for them with a killer statement or some awesome info. We'll see how things unfold.

My main point -

Nintendo needs to release a fairly large amount of info at GDC, preferably before Sony reveals anything. They need to keep the best for E3, though, so they should definitely not reveal everything.
