So, I'm new-ish to AC. ACNL is the first AC game I've ever played, and I wasn't even able to buy it during the release a year ago, but later in January of this year. So I've only been playing for about six months!
Here's some things I've been curious about:

- When you update your town's dream, does the current time, music and weather affect the dream people have of your town later? I really like the 7pm music and I want my town's dream to be either rainy or stormy, but is the weather and time of your dream random or do you have some control over that?

- I've been thinking about getting another copy of ACNL. If I buy a digital copy through the Nintendo eShop, will it affect my hard copy at all?

Also any tips for people relatively new to playing would be great n_n

Question 1: Everything currently happening in your town is saved. The time, weather and all that. The only things that do change are that villagers will be awake regardless of the time, and certain buildings (like Re-Tail) will be inaccessible.

Question 2: It won't affect your physical copy.

Yes, your dream will keep the weather and effects of your current time.
the 7pm music will still be playing

and digital copies do not affect hard copies (time travelling via settings will affect both copies though)

I don't know about the first one because I don't play with the Dream Suite often, but for the second one, no. Downloading it won't affect the one you currently have.

1. Yes, the weather and time is preserved in the updated dream.

2. No, it will not.

Thanks everybody for being so quick n_n Also thanks for the tip about time traveling, I didn't consider that yet. Does anyone have more than one copy of ACNL? Is it worth it? I'm so invested in this town that I'd hate to reset it but I know so much more now and I wish my map and stuff was different.

I have an extra copies and it was worth it for me.
When I started my 2nd town I set the clock to a different time. Two hours behind the firs town. Also picked a different season for the holidays. This way I didn't have to play Pave in one town and than go the next. Doing that event twice in one day would be too much.

Also it was nice to escape winter town and visit summer town.

I have three. I have most of my interest invested in Mirage, and the others can sometimes become a chore. They have saved me, though, since I would have lost a villager the other day but had a town to send him to.

It was said, but I would again stress that the 3DS clock will affect both towns if you aren't careful. Also, I think you will streetpass with the last town played.

Reindeer already answered your questions. I want to point out a pretty cool trick with the dream town time, though. Always try to upload your dream save 1 minute until your bell goes off (5:59 or 8:59 for example). That way, dreamers can hear your town tune clearly.
