Possible ways to scan amiibo cards?

Is using the NFC reader the only way to scan the amiibo cards? It's either that or new 3ds xl if I'm not mistaken?

You can use the bottom screen of the New Nintendo 3DS/New Nintendo 3DS XL as that has an NFC Scanner built in.

You could always just wait. I'm sure some company will end up releasing a 3rd party device which will no doubt be cheaper.
