Pokémon Pokemon Legends Z-A General Discussion

I think I just have to rant somewhere about my gripes with the game, lol. But my main concern is that, why did they lock a lot of the mega stones behind story content?? I shiny hunted Mawile very early on so she could be my partner Pokemon, and I was excited to use her for the rest of the story until I found out you had to progress much further to get her mega stone. So I was like, okay I'll shiny hunt Froslass and Scolipede then so I can use them. Surprise!! Their stones are ALSO locked behind mid- to late-story missions. Meanwhile other 'mons have their stones available from the get-go. I even have a Delphox on my team and I learned you need to do online battles to get their mega stone. Huh??? Wdym I can't use the mega of this pokemon I get early on?? Why are you preventing me from enjoying the mega of this pokemon throughout the story?

I get maybe the new 'mons can have their megas locked until a certain story point, but Mawile has been an established Mega already. I don't care if I have to pay to get a Mawilite, I want it from the get-go because I love shiny mega Mawile. Lame asf.

Overall I'm having fun with the game, the characters are lovable and exploring is fun, but locking some megas behind story mode really hurt my impression of the game. "Mega-evolve your pokemon to defeat other mega pokemon!!" yea I would if I could. Right now with where I am in the story, the only mega-able mons on my team are Gyarados and Lopunny, and I'm not interested in levelling up other 'mons for the sake of using the available megas. It's probably not a big deal for majority but it hurts my immersion of the game if I'm unable to mega-evolve pokemon that have been available to me early on, lmao.

I have been having a lot of fun playing. The new battle system took some getting used to but really liking it. It’s fun looking for shiny Pokemon. My complaint was the huge leap in level. I wouldn’t have minded it had it not been so big.

Can I get a Jolteon early on? That's a good selling point ;)

I saw in a YouTube video that you can find an Eevee within the first couple hours and after two promotion battles I think and get a Thunder Stone from the Stone Emporium which is unlocked around the same time. I haven’t found Eevee’s exact location yet but it’s on one of the roofs as a guaranteed static encounter.

Here is the map I use to find eevee .

Well at least the level jump isn’t as bad as GSC’s was after you got the Fog Badge. I just remember how weird it was that your Pokémon were so over leveled compared to the wild Pokémon which were way too low for where they were located.

That’s true , I had forgotten all about that. It was just weird to skip so many . I kinda thought they might skip some. Was just hoping they would wait longer. My main team right now is around 40.

My biggest problem with the game so far is holding down a seperate button to pick an attack.
The day/night cycle is fun, the real time battle really forces you to use all 4 of your moves too.

I'm not that far into the game yet, but either way I assume we don't get to enter too many buildings which is a shame.
Don't think the one city thing would be as terrible if we had like 20 buildings to explore to make up for it. It's just lazy.

I've been having fun playing a bunch and I'm going at a slow pace trying to complete everything I can (in between the many other games I am playing), so I am not finished with the main story yet. I have a few thoughts so far, which may change as I progress later into the game, and agree with many points you all have already mentioned.
  • Performance: Excellent, runs smooth, much like PLA, I have not experienced any sort of slowdown. Violet often ran laggy and choppy for me so I wondered if it might be like that, but thankfully not. I haven't encountered any sort of bug or glitch either.
  • Graphics: (I am playing the Switch version) Character and Pokemon models look great. This game has some of the best customization options for your trainer I have seen in a Pokemon game. The environment looks good enough, but some building, road, and background textures are strangely blurry or pixelated looking. The grass and water look decent. I think I preferred the art style in PLA. Honestly I don't care too much about graphics anyway as long as the game looks and plays just fine, which it does.
  • Battle system: Very different. Took awhile to adjust, still feel like I'm getting used to it. ZL should be a toggle rather than a hold, because that gets tiring when playing a long time. Maybe I'm just not so good at this, but personally I'm finding it sometimes inaccurate with targeting the wrong character or nothing. I enjoy how many moves have changed the way they work, encouraging me to use moves I might not normally use in a Pokemon game. Such as ones that would typically cause you to wait a turn but are now faster to use, moves that would normally have a lower accuracy are more accurate, as well as some previously weaker moves that have been buffed. Overall the battle system is fun enough for a side game but I would rather not have this in the main games, I much prefer turn based. I have not played the online pvp yet, I plan to try it after I get into the postgame.
  • Story: Ok, a bit mysterious, I feel like it's leading up to some big reveals but I'm not quite there yet. Most of it seems pretty chill just hanging out with your Team MZ friends in between meeting new challenger characters and rogue megas, which is cool. Some of those story battles were surprisingly difficult and I came really close to blacking out, which is refreshing to see in a Pokemon game. I have enjoyed many of the side quest stories with various people and their Pokemon living in the city, it really makes it seem like a world people live in.
  • Lumiose City: I'm fine with the whole game being in this one big city. I find it convenient since you don't have to go too far out of your way to find Pokemon or turn in quests. Running around is fast enough you don't need a mount. The only bad thing about everything being so compact, is in some wild areas I get absolutely overwhelmed with large crowds of agressive Pokemon, with not much room to escape to. It can be difficult trying to catch one Pokemon out of the group. I wish there were more buildings to enter. I get that most of them are probably private apartments or offices but at least let me go see inside the shops and cafes, or go visit some random friendly NPCs. I like how the inside of the hotel looks. The day/night changes are interesting and give me even more different things to do.
  • Pokemon: Loving some of the new megas! I really wish you could pet your Pokemon or interact with them more. As a coffee enjoyer, the cafes are neat though.
  • In general: I think I covered enough stuff but overall a pretty great and different Pokemon game, some minor flaws, but I'm having a good time.

I plan on getting the DLC pretty soon. I was definitely going to buy it before Christmas so that I wouldn’t forget to get it before the trailer came out today. I didn’t expect it to be coming out before January.
