Plot Question

I had an auto plot sold today, can I also adopt a villager from somebody else's island and have 2 sold plots or do I have to wait until tomorrow to adopt another villager?

I'm getting mixed responses from Google. Someone said you could have two villagers move in and no more than that, but someone else said only one per plot per day.

It looks like you can't adopt two villagers in one day, otherwise the second one overrides the first.

If I remember when I started, I invited 2 villagers in one day, but the moved in on subsequent days. And actually both came after a random one that showed up uninvited.
