I have been playing for 5 hours today following the picture guide to get the villagers framed photos and have not even received a single one today. I understand it’s supposed to be a rare item but when it’s this hard it makes it not even fun. It should be received upon reaching max friendship, not be a random game after that.

I haven't gotten a single photo in the game yet, even after following all the guides. Sometimes I feel like it's not meant to be for me! I'm finding it impossible, even with expensive gifts and careful planning!
Have you tried using the stack method? I was able to get all my villager's pics (besides the new ones) that way!
...I don't have a link to the thread describing it, but once you've reached max friendship, fill your inventory and gift the villagers from a stack of fruit (exotic or coconut, must be unwrapped!) They'll just take the top fruit and send you a thank-you gift in the mail, which has a decent chance of being their picture!
Seriously, I cannot recommend it enough. Not only does it give you a good shot of getting their pics (I don't believe they give them in exchange for gifts UNLESS you use it, because they only have a chance of sending it in the mail... it's weird) but it also keeps you from potentially messing up their houses with furniture or excess clothing.

I’ve got several pictures from regular gift giving, so I know it’s possible, I just seem really unlucky lately and I don’t know what to change.

I wouldn't be shocked if during last night's maintenance they probably made it so you, @Insulaire, @Hobowire and everyone else looking for them couldn't get them anymore.

But, seriously, stack method. It's really easy (just fill your inventory with 100 bell stacks) and WORKS.
Haven't tried this yet but I'm sold on trying it when I'll need it for villagers I plan to move out.
Any idea how long it takes to get a picture from someone, though?

The only way I've been able to obtain photos is by gifting wrapped fossils like a mad person. But it is and will always be tedious work I'm afraid.
I actually finally got my long hold out, Fauna, the other day. Couldn't believe it, only took literally over a 120 days of constant gift givingI wouldn't be shocked if during last night's maintenance they probably made it so you, @Insulaire, @Hobowire and everyone else looking for them couldn't get them anymore.

It depends. I got Marina's pic before I even really tried- I only gifted her from the stack method that day because I was gifting a bunch of other villagers that way. On the other hand, I've had some who hold out for WEEKS because they're stubborn
At the end of the day, it's still random, but it tends to work really well in the long run!

in your pockets have a stack of fruit and then fill all your empty spaces with bells. gift the villager the fruit, they will realise your pockets are full and so will mail a gift the next day - this has a chance of being their photo (I've achieved a fair few photos this way) as opposed to if you just gave them the fruit with empty pockets, which I believe now has no chance of yielding a photo
You can still get a photo from normal hand gifting, I got one just a few minutes after posting this thread. But does the fruit stack trick have a higher chance?

oh last I checked you couldn't get a photo from hand gifting fruit so it's if that's possible again that's great! but yes I believe there is a slightly higher chance if you do the fruit stack trick (details here)
The item has to have a sell value of 750+ bells. The Gold Nugget has a sell value of 10k bells, so that does have a possibility of yielding a photo. The fruit stack trick does have a higher chance than receiving a gift in person.
