What happens if you sit on a rock when you visit your friends town, and they have not upgrade? will it work? Will it look funny on your friends end?

I thought it gave you an error if you tried to visit another town without doing the upgrade. Or is that just for connecting to the internet for far away towns?

There is no visiting other towns unless both have the update or neither have the update> The simian at the train station will quickly make that clear.

Yes, it surely does.

You can't visit a friend's town if they hadn't upgraded their game yet. In fact, they have to do that in order to enable online features.
