Old Villagers Returning??

So i read somewhere that just as in New Leaf.. occasionally old villagers would return to visit your town? is this true? does anyone who played the gamecube game recall this? (i did play, but i was so young i dont remember any fine details like this)
I heard they would appear in an acre, and remember you, but then dissapear..

This is true. I had an old villager, Claude the bunny, visiting me a few weeks after he had left town. He was crying and saying how he missed everyone i think.
If I remember correctly they will only visit your town if they have moved to another town and not if being voided.

Yeah, I remember this.

I had Coco come back and say she missed the town, and when I came back to the acre she disappeared forever.

I think I remember this, but only once and it never happened again. I think it should have happened more often

I think it was because the villager data was temporarily stored in the memory card data and gets permanently deleted after another villager moves out.
