Obtaining exclusive foreign items?

Is there any way to obtain special foreign items while in America other than trading with other players? I really want some of the items from Japanese holidays but I can't find any possible way to get them other than trading.

Which items are you wanting? The JP DLCs or holiday items?

There is no other way, though I do think it's set based on your language setting.

A way to get items from Japanese holidays is to find someone who has a game from that region and then when they open their gates, you can talk to Isabelle to get the item exclusive for the festival.

I've gotten one of the ogre masks this way as well as the Cucumber Horse.

You can get the japanese items if you're playing a Japanese game in a Japanese DS. doesn't matter if youre in NA or in Asia if you have the two.
