Okay so I've been contemplating buying a second copy of new leaf to maybe do some cycling, but I was planning on just buying my second copy virtually instead of a physically. Would this mess things up? Do you need to have 2 physical copies?

No, you do not need two physical copies.

Having a digital and physical copy is fine , I've seen many people do it. I myself have two physical copies on my other 3DS and one on my main.

But remember that if you change the date on your system, that it's going to mess up your digital town. Unless of course you remember the date you last played on your cycle town. Then you would just time travel back to the time you last played when starting up and your good!

Yeah, I think you should... And no, it doesn't mess up anything unless you change you're 3ds date.. Then I think I might mess up the game but idk

I've heard you need a separate sd card?? I'm not sure how true that is because I don't have two copies myself but I have read that one file could corrupt the other if saved on the same sd card

That's only if you have two digitals. That puts you at a very very high risk for corruption though, so basically, don't do it due to the save ID and the painstaking method needed to accomplish two digitals successfully. You can have as many cartridges per console as you please, but only one virtual copy.
