non-TTers: do you consider getting items/diys from people who TT to be cheating?

IMO it’s not cheating if you can do something that everyone else can do without getting in trouble for it

Feel bad, no, but I'd rather get them when it's the right time on my island. The only one I'm considering getting out of turn is the summer shell rug, since that wasn't available the first time through summer.

Since AC isn't a competitive game, I don't see how you can 'cheat'.

I don't time travel as I like to experience the seasons as they pass, but I've visited islands in different seasons and bought items or picked up free DIYs which were unavailable on my island at that time.

I don't like getting seasonal items/DIYs from time travellers or even from southern hemisphere people. But if it's a regular all year round item/diy then I don't mind!

I would prefer not to be given things I haven't unlocked yet. I wouldn't use the word "cheating" for it so much as "spoiling." Cheating implies a standard I enforce on everyone else, while spoiling is only in terms of my personal style of play.

I don't. I usually try to get all the seasonal DIYs by myself but sometimes I really can't manage to get them all because of lack of time, so I buy from other players whatever I need but can no longer get on my game. Part of the fun in this game comes from trading with other players and there's really no "right way" to play the game, as everyone plays it in their special way. For these reasons, neither trading or time travelling can be considered as "cheating", in my opinion.

of course not. this might be an unpopular opinion but i really don’t think the concept of cheating is something that can be applied to animal crossing. seeing as how in simple terms, cheating is defined to be a violation of rules ... there are no rules in animal crossing lmao. the beauty of this franchise is that we get to control the world that we’re in and so, people are free to do whatever they please.

while i personally don’t time travel all that often, i don’t consider it to be a form of cheating, either; as long as it’s not something that harms someone else, i genuinely believe that everyone has the right to play how they want. choosing whether or not to time travel is a personal choice and neither choice is wrong, imo. :)

I don't think it's cheating, but I also don't consider TTing to be cheating. I only consider hacking non-available items into the game to be cheating. Some people might have ideas to use seasonal items to decorate their island with even if they aren't in season. That's just good ol' trading.

Even though I do consider TTing cheating, I felt incredibly bummed that they only made the Christmas decorations available in the middle of December, as we often start to decorate our houses where I live around mid November. Because of that, I bought a crafted Festive Tree so I could at least have something earlier for the holidays.

I really think they should have at least unlocked the Christmas decorations by December 1st, as we would have a full month to enjoy the holiday's decorations...

Nah I wouldn't consider it cheating. I don't like to TT myself but I'd be lying if I said I haven't done it a couple of times. I work weird hours and sometimes don't have to time to play so it gives me a way to catch up on things I'd miss otherwise like Turkey Day. I wouldn't really want to rush to unlock things or get access to seasonal items/ DIYs but if other people want to then it doesn't bother me. Since AC is a very casual game I think people should just play how they want to.

When you preach on the internet against time-travelling and then go and buy seasonal items from someone you know TT'd for it, it makes you a hypocrite, simple.

I feel like the topic got way off topic with the answers. The question was not if we consider time traveling cheating. The question was if we don't time travel, is getting items and things that we can't get yet in normal time considered breaking the rules of our playstyle. Two different questions there.

I personally don't seek out DIYs and items I can't get yet. But I see no problem for trading for them once I can get them. The only items I'm against getting early are the golden items because they are locked to achievements and I feel like that takes away the pleasure of earning them yourself or items that are hacked in because Nintendo has been doubling down on hacking recently.

I am not against tt. It was, and still is, my main way of playing in nl. I do have a rule against using tt in this game, tho. I personally consider what you describe as "breaking my rules" but that is just my way of doing things.

I personally do not TT, and while I maybe prefer items from non-TTers, I don't really care. Honestly as long as I don't ask, it's legit in my eyes 😂 But of course, I will try not to go to other islands to get different seasonal stuff that does not match my island, since I find that kind of ruins the fun.

I do TT, but only for the purpose of pushing amiibos out for my shop, not for my actual game play. I even skip over event days if it's going to land on a day I'd have to move to. Regardless, I don’t think getting DIYs etc from people on here who do TT to events is cheating.

I have never time traveled, even in my previous games like New Leaf. I dunno' why. I feel like I'd be robbing myself of the full experience or mess up my game somehow (especially with my villagers). I don't think it's cheating by any means, it's just how I like to play :) Also, nabbing recipes that are not in season for a specific project, etc. are not cheating to me, as I don't equate that with time travel. I save things in my storage that are out of season to have all year round, just in case someone needs/wants it, including DIYs that might be way out of season.

I don't consider TTing cheating, and I have definitely bought items from people who have TTed. For example, I bought all the festive and illuminated DIYs on this forum before they were available to me in the game. You never know how someone obtained an item. There are people who have every conceivable item and material stack in the game available to purchase in whatever quantity you want. They obviously TT'ed or obtained them in some other frowned upon fashion but it doesn't bother me because it enhances my game. I wanted to decorate for the holidays without having to shoot down endless balloons etc.
