Hi! I am totally new to this Scribbler397 told me about this forum. How do I start selling and buying items via wifi on my New Leaf? Thanks!

Well, make bids on items you want, or post a new thread listing what you have for sale or trade, and what you want in return.
It's beneficial to have your town name and Friend Code in your signature so trades are quick and easy and there is no delay in being able to add each other. If you don't add someone elses friend code, they can't visit your town anyway.
Just in case, your friend code is your 3DS friend code. You find it on your 3DS main screen by clicking the smiley in the top center of your touch screen. There should be a card with your Mii and your friend code right along with it.

Aquadirt covered things pretty well, so I'll just add how to actually conduct the trades.
Both parties will drop their items/bells/their portion of the trade, and they'll go and pick up whatever they were offered. Trades are pretty simple that way, except you should make sure that you have what you asked for and were paid the proper amount.

To get to someone else's town or to let others into yours, head to the train station and talk to Porter, and invite friends from "Faraway" or visited a "Faraway" town. From there, you can open your gates, so any mutual friends you have can enter your town, or if they have their gates open, you can visit theirs.

There's also some common etiquette and rules that people follow:
1. Don't pick up any items that weren't offered. If you accidentally do so, drop it back down.
2. Don't leave the train plaza unless stated otherwise. By plaza, I mean the cobblestone outside of the train station.
3. Don't run in towns, especially over flowers.
4. Don't talk to their villagers.
Some people have different rules, and are okay with running and talking. It's best to play it safe, though, and unless stated otherwise, quickly conduct your trade and leave. Some people will prefer to hit "End Session" (if they're the host, they can hit "Start" and select it) rather than let you use the train. This saves the trade, kicks you out and closes the gate, leaving no room for an Error screen.

If ANYTHING goes wrong in a trade, such as attempted theft or destruction of property, the wireless switch on the side of the 3DS could be hit and it'll end the session and revert things to the last save-- usually to the time when you entered/opened the gates.
