I think lazy villagers in general are always late to meeting you at your house. Just wait there for at least 15 minutes. If they don't show up, go check up on them.
But I think that also if you confirm an appointment, and then go travel to another town or if you have people over at yours, then villagers can cancel the appointment.

Funny is, Rizzo ask me to go his house and we set a time, I forgot about it and went to talk to him, then he told me sorry about forgetting out appointment and so which just remind me!! oh, there's such a thing? lol
yeah, i had somebody go to my town because i was selling my tbt bells, but he still remembered about the appointment so i'm thinking that isn't the case
YEAH! we run the town and pay for all the public works projects and they ditch us when they ask us on a date

You need to find them while your gates are opened. If it's really late and I need to cancel I open my gates. Go find the villager and talk to them. They'll cancel the playdate. I than close the gates. I found this trick out while letting a friend into get something. The villager came up and was upset that she had to cancel.
Maybe not talking to them still cancels the playdate. They just didn't talk to you while your friend was there. I know I had a playdate with a villagers a couple of times. While waiting I went to visit a friends town. Came back and waited for 10 minute for mr. no show. He said he was sorry.
