Hi there! Hopefully this is the right place to post this...

I won Julian from a raffle last night and couldn't be more pleased! But since he is a dreamie I really want to make sure he gets a nice placement for his house (and doesn't trash any of my hybrids or perfects). I have never done villager/plot resettings and spent a lot of last night looking at faqs to make sure I knew exactly what to do.

A friend of mine is convinced it has a chance of corrupting your data, though. Is this just superstition, or a common problem? I've seen a lot of people who seem to use this trick a LOT for every villager that moves in, so it SEEMS safe, but I am still a little nervous. I'd just like some confirmation on the matter so I can go ahead and start trying to place his house in the morning. ; 3 ;

I'm gonna go to bed for now but I'll definitely be back to check on the responses in the morning. Thanks for your help!!

Your friend doesn't know that we are not certain it's plot resetting. In fact, we're not certain of anything at all. I've done it many times, so have others, so I think it's safe.

My guess was that whoever they knew of that had done it and had this happen had done something silly like turned the game off when it was saving; something that would OBVIOUSLY have a high chance of corrupting your data. Or just flat-out accidentally deleted their main character by accident because they weren't being careful... XD

Thank you for the reassurance, though ; v ;

Assuming you have a physical cart: Your data can only corrupt if the game is somehow interrupted while writing to the save (or possibly by trauma to the game cart i.e. dropping the 3DS). I'm not as sure about digital downloads - given that they're saved to the 3DS's own memory (EDIT: which is presumably being accessed and written to more often) they do seem to be a bit more temperamental. Most of these resetting=corruption stories are just scaremongering.

Make your new character, get to the town, walk around, look for a plot, if the plot isn't in the right spot, exit to the home menu. Repeat until you get the plot in the place you want, then talk to Isabelle and Nook, get your house placed, get your TPC from Isabelle. When you exit the town hall and regain control of your character, save and quit, then delete the new character. Re-enter the game with your main character and proceed as usual.

Nope. It won't corrupt if you don't close why it is saving or whatever.

I've plot resetted more than a hundred times.

I've done it about 500 times at least (that's no exaggeration). I think it's pretty safe and also, hey, I'd be pretty annoyed having a town with great villagers but all in terrible places.

Thinking about it, I've definitely done it a lot more times than 500... hm

It's fine. But I always press the power button instead of the home just 'cause.. But it's really safe, honestly. I've done it loads. But it gets boring after a while! :p

I have a question- I thought the villager changes each time you reset? Like first you will have Erik, next Rod. Or is it because your game already knows its Julian you will have him each time-?

The game knows they invited in Julian so they will have him each time.

Yup, Julian is supposed to move, so no matter what, it will be Julian's plot and nobody else.
While if you aren't expecting a villager, and that you have 8 villagers , one will come random. It will be the personality you don't have ~

Thank you so much, everyone! I also thought it was probably scaremongering, but really just needed to check! I do have a physical copy of the game, so I am even less worried knowing that. I'll begin resetting after a short nap to find a good spot for his home <3

I'm definitely full at 10 with Julian, so I doubt there will be any resetting for me on the horizon... though I might try it for a camper if I get down to 9 spots, since I am missing a Lazy villager and I could try to get one of the ones I want from the campsite :D

I've done my fair share of plot resetting, but do I think it's safe? I really don't know. :/

But don't they always say in the manuals and such that it's bad to continuously turn the system on and off? :confused:

Yeah, I would suggest just going to the home menu rather than turning the system off. Less stress on the 3DS's own memory that way.

This is what I was going to suggest. I don't know if this is why it's safer, but it's what my opinion is; I think using the home button is safer because of the fact the home button can even be used to close games. If it weren't, I don't think Nintendo would have added that feature in. o;

I got nervous after resetting for an entire day, but I've never had a problem, despite doing it at least 100 times.

Seems there are plenty of answers here but I'll toss mine in for good measure. I don't have actual information that proves anything one way or another, but I do have my own experience. I have over 10 hours of just plot resetting and I've never encountered a problem.

Just to nitpick lol - JellyBeans didn't say they turned it off then back on, they said they pressed the power button.

If they do it the same as me it's a brief press of the power button to close the game, then a press of the home button when it comes up with the screen to power off or go to the home menu.

I find it easier that way than home then close, but that's my personal preference! No idea if one is safer than the other.

Alright, thanks to your guys' advice, Julian is now moving in to a pretty nice spot :D I'm gonna have to demolish and move my campsite, but that's really no biggie to me, I'm just glad to have him move into the bottom half of my town where not much is going on! I got a few campers while resetting for his plot, thankfully no one I wanted though. I would have been so upset.. XD

Nice! Just for further reinforcement I plot reset for about 6 hours straight the other day to get Diana ;) It's safe.
