If the path has borders then 2 if it doesn't then 1 but I prefer 2 as it adds more space for the mayor to walk in . Unless your using one of those dirt paths with only 1path way , but it's your choice also if its like a main road then 3 but 2 is the safest :)

hm, thanks for the advice! but im still having trouble where the paths should actually go in my map. :'( so hard lol

Just start easy, first u just place paths leading to the buildings so start by your house then continue on to connect to the other building like an intersection and pathways to the places /buildings, also when your done u can surroun the paths with trees flowers and bushes :)

I don't know if anyone else likes the method I use but it's my town so I don't care. I use 2 tiles on my main paths, and then one tile on the ones that branch off to houses. I started doing this because some of my starting villagers that I still have plotted their houses in a way that made this easier. You can always do three tiles wide for main streets and two for side ones, or two tiles for all of them. I guess this depends on your path designs too, some look nicer if they're at least 2 tiles wide.

I started my paths by looking at the routes I take most often and placing tiles there. The station, Re-Tail, your house, and other locations you visit frequently are good places to start. You can try to sketch them out using flowers or simple patterns and tweak them when you're happy. I try to avoid putting down paths in routes I never use, since it's harder to get used to changing the way you go between locations to something less intuitive and slower. Don't be afraid of chopping down trees since you can plant them again. If they're fruit trees, just pick the fruits and plant them elsewhere. It's also easier if you divide your town into sections and do the paths for each one at a time, as long as you remember that they'll all have to connect with each other (unless you don't want them to).

If you don't already, I recommend using a side character for paths from the start. You might want to change paths or use some that take up extra pattern space, and you won't want to have to change everything on your mayor if that happens. That's up to you, of course. :)
