Need help upgrading my train station

hi there, I would be interested in having my train station upgraded, but I've never had any visitors! So I'll need a lot of help from you wonderful people here.

I'm not really sure how this works, to be honest...do you just arrive by train, then leave, then come back again (or however many times you want?). So if I just leave my gate open, people can come as they please? I'd love for anyone to help if it's possible...
