So I know I'm a little late to the game, but here's how I made my first (2) million bells.
The island was a huge help, especially if you can play at night. There are very many rare bugs worth 1k-10k, as well as plenty of fish that sell well. You can bring back 40 items at a time, which means you can max out at 400,000 bells in ONE trip. Trips usually only take me 30 minutes to an hour.
Brewster's Cafe is also a big help once unlocked, and once you get a part-time job there. The superior beans he gives you can be sold at re-tail in one of the spots for almost 10 k.
Make sure you visit the dream suite for a free 5000 bells each day, and be sure to sell all your extra fossils and make sure you find your money rock. If you wait to upgrade your house or do any more PWPs until you get a good amount saved in your bank, you'll begin to make interest. It's 1 bell per 200 saved, so it adds up quickly. Definitely make sure you enact the bell boom ordinance as well, because if you're just trying to make money, you don't need to buy anything for a bit.
Hopefully you didn't lose your perfect fruit. (If your native fruit is oranges, I can give you one to plant.) An orchard of perfect fruit trees, sold in someone else's town, will net you a great deal of bells as well. Turnips, and the official turnip exchange thread, is a fantastic way to go as well, profiting several hundred bells per turnip if you can get it right.
Honestly, there's so many ways to make money in ACNL, and most of the ways are really low-effort, too. A lot of people are willing to help out, but you may consider instead looking for giveaways or people openly offering bells to newbies? It looks a lot better on your end and doesn't attract people who are liable to get upset when help is asked for in what they would consider to be a rude manner.

yay glad i could help!!! those couple million should get u thru house payments and pwps!! im sorry my town was a mess lol and my house isnt finished but we had fun :^)

yeah!! thats what i did. a lot of my bells on my town are from old towns where i asked someone to hold my stuff when i reset. island is great - u can tt to nighttime and get gold beetles.
