To be perfectly honest, Nintendo should stick to the handheld business. That's just my personal opinion. If they wish to make it in the console market, they need to at least be current gen or better.
I disagree. I don't think Nintendo ever intended to directly compete with Microsoft and Sony for that particular slice of the gaming pie. The Wii was designed to appeal to people that the XBox and PlayStation didn't appeal to - older people, families, more "casual" gamers if you will. For instance, I have never got along with the controller on a PS1 or PS2. I just can't use it. Motion controls though are a doddle. And of course a lot of more "hardcore" gamers hate motion controls - witness the howls of outrage when Microsoft and Sony introduced their motion controls (to compete with the Wii).
I think there will always be a place for Nintendo's brand of family-friendly, fun (and less expensive) consoles for those of us who don't want to sit in a room on our own for days on end shooting things, and would rather play something the whole family can get involved in and enjoy. Even my own mother enjoyed bowling on the Wii, it took her less than 5 minutes to learn the controls and she'd never played a console game in all her 65 years. Can't see her doing that on an XBox or PS3.
That said, if you want to use a Wii to spend days on end shooting things you can - there are enough more adult games (for the Wii at least, not sure about the WiiU apart from Zombie U) to keep a shooter busy for a while. There are games on XBox and PlayStation that are more family-friendly, as well. It's just that Nintendo makes pretty much the only console designed with the family in mind, and it would be a shame if they stopped making them.
