Naughty Dog on Nintendo

To be perfectly honest, Nintendo should stick to the handheld business. That's just my personal opinion. If they wish to make it in the console market, they need to at least be current gen or better.

I disagree. I don't think Nintendo ever intended to directly compete with Microsoft and Sony for that particular slice of the gaming pie. The Wii was designed to appeal to people that the XBox and PlayStation didn't appeal to - older people, families, more "casual" gamers if you will. For instance, I have never got along with the controller on a PS1 or PS2. I just can't use it. Motion controls though are a doddle. And of course a lot of more "hardcore" gamers hate motion controls - witness the howls of outrage when Microsoft and Sony introduced their motion controls (to compete with the Wii).

I think there will always be a place for Nintendo's brand of family-friendly, fun (and less expensive) consoles for those of us who don't want to sit in a room on our own for days on end shooting things, and would rather play something the whole family can get involved in and enjoy. Even my own mother enjoyed bowling on the Wii, it took her less than 5 minutes to learn the controls and she'd never played a console game in all her 65 years. Can't see her doing that on an XBox or PS3.

That said, if you want to use a Wii to spend days on end shooting things you can - there are enough more adult games (for the Wii at least, not sure about the WiiU apart from Zombie U) to keep a shooter busy for a while. There are games on XBox and PlayStation that are more family-friendly, as well. It's just that Nintendo makes pretty much the only console designed with the family in mind, and it would be a shame if they stopped making them.

You probably shouldn't use 'spend days on end shooting things' as your example of more mature games. Because That's stereotyping people who prefer games with more depth and story as shooter-crazy people.

And I am not a shooter-crazy person. In fact, out of all the genres I play, shooters are probably the games I play the least. 9_9

My idea of mature games are games with plot, character depth, and a great gameplay experience. Games where it feels like you're actually doing something big. Zelda (and Pokemon, I would suppose) are the only Nintendo Franchises I've played recently that come close to this sort of thing.

I play all kinds of video games because I like all kinds of video games. I'm not asking Nintendo to turn Mario into a gun toting plumber or for them to add blood effects to Link's sword blows. I'm asking them to make their games better, to put more love into them. Also they need to advertize their games that aren't just the kiddy fair they want only kids and families playing. People are so used to the same old bland games from the Nintendo franchises (New Super Mario Brothers) that most people probably will never give good games that Nintendo actually added a new spin to (Super Mario 3D World) a chance and will never find out that they're actually really good!

Nintendo can't survive long as an actual gaming company for home consoles if they only appeal to the minority shoppers (Parents who only buy games for their little kids, family 'gamers', older people). We actual gamers are the life's blood of a gaming company because we're the ones who give them the majority of their income. If we don't like them, we tend to spread it around. My grandparents used to buy Nintendo systems the moment they came out because they've been Nintendo fans since I was a young child. They are far, far FAR from gamers. They haven't actively played games since I was like 12. But even they don't have any interest in playing Nintendo's games now that they require wii motes, wii pads, and all sorts of things like that. So not, it's not just gamers that Nintendo's turning off from purchasing their stuff.

Also I don't agree with anyone who says "Nintendo needs to get with the current generation!" They STARTED the current generation. The Wii U, XBOne, and PS4 are the next generation, and the Wii U came out first. I can only assume you're complaining about graphics or something at this point. And considering this is a forum about Animal Crossing (which does not have the best or most realistic graphics and has a super child-friendly art style) one would think you guys would be the type to know you shouldn't be judging games by their graphics (or art style) because compared to the actual gameplay elements, how fancy it looks is far from the most important thing (and that a game with kiddy graphics can still be enjoyable).

I'm sorry, that wasn't my intention. I wouldn't actually categorise shooter games as inherently more mature - R rated maybe (some are, some aren't) but as you say storylines with more plot depth are what I would categorise as "mature". The Wii had loads of these over its lifetime - Zack & Wiki, Another Code, Zelda come to mind immediately. And there was MadWorld, House of the Dead etc for R rated er... fun, if that's your thing.

Over its lifetime the Wii had stacks of interesting games. What I was trying to say is that there may not be much available for the WiiU as yet (although I want one just for Lego City Undercover), but there will be. And some of those games will appeal to me, some won't. Some will appeal to my 16 year old son, some won't. Some will appeal to my 4 year old daughter (PokePark), some won't. And some will even be fun for my mother. This does not hold true for the XBox or PS, which are overpriced imo, with overpriced games I mostly have no interest in playing. I am a hardcore gamer in terms of the amount of time I spend playing, casual (ish) in terms of the kinds of games I prefer to play. Nintendo just has a wider audience in mind than XBox/PS, and the "minority" you describe is actally a really big market with a lot of spending power and there is really no other console for them.

When I think I of 'mature' games I generally think of anything w/ the 'mature' parental advisory label on it...

Regardless of whether this guy still works for Naughty Dog or if his comment is relevant, I still think the Wii and Wii U have been total busts. Granted though, when Smash Bros. and AC come to the Wii U sales will pickup, they are prone to plummet yet again.

I say scratch the whole "Wii" idea. Get rid of the stinking controller that you have to point at a screen. For gods sake video games are for relaxation. I do not want to have to point and stand, as lazy as it may sound, when playing a video game.

I also think Nintendo needs to "branch out." Let's get rid of the idea that Nintendo is made for kids, as ludicrous as it sounds. Nintendo needs to add games like the Call of Duties, Battlefields, and Resident Evils to their library of games. I understand that Nintendo has never been about all the "M" titles, but if they want to succeed that is what they are going to have to do.
