So in a recent interview, apparently the Naughty Dog co-founder Jason Rubin claims "Nintendo is irrelevant as a hardware manufacturer in the console business right now."

What's all of you guys thoughts on this? Personally, I kind of agree. Nintendo needs to step up their game with consoles. Also note he specifically said "console". There's no doubt that Nintendo is owning the handheld market for video games.

The Wii U has seen lackluster sales whilst the 3DS has sold extremely well. The XBOX One sold so much systems in one day.

I feel like Nintendo needs to work more on their handheld consoles. They have been making a lot of great games but that greatness should be applied to systems as well.

I have to agree with this. It feels like Nintendo are just cashing the cows of their previous consoles. It's almost as if the Wii was about Nintendo peeing, and the Wii U was about Nintendo peeing on people. They're acting extemely desperate. Why can't they come up with something more original than a console with an additional letter on the end? It's utterly ridiculous!

I think it's a bit misleading to bring Naughty Dog into this. This dude making the comments hasn't worked there since 2004. He also bankrupt THQ.

Naughty Dog played a big part for Sony during the PlayStation VS. N64 console war, so the rivalry runs deep. In fact, it sounds like something they would have said back then.

Even so, the WiiU fell FLAT on its face in sales and marketing and is considered failure of a console, so he's not too far off the mark. There are a few good games and features that the WiiU has to offer, but Nintendo executed this whole thing so poorly.

Is this just a quote of one of those random things people just sometimes say? Idk what the point of recognizing the comment seriously is to be honest, we are treating it more seriously than it probably should be taken?

But then again I suppose it is fairly true, at least compared to other consoles. Yet the Wii U had some brilliant games, I imagine its the console price that is hurting it.

Still trying to wonder how the Xbox One actually sold. I thought people hated it. There aren't even any good games on it!

I'm just bringing it up as a discussion point.

Oh yeah, not enough games huh?

New Super Mario Bros. U
New Super Luigi U
Scribblenauts Unlimited
Pikmin 3
Nintendo Land
Sonic and Sega All Stars Racing Transformed
Sonic Lost World
Mario and Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympic Games
The Legend of Zelda Wind Waker HD
Super Mario 3D World
Family Party: 30 Great Games Obstacle Arcade
Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate
Pokemon Rumble U
ZombiU

Coming Soon:
Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze
Lego The Hobbit

Note, this doesn't include the games you can get off the Wii U's Eshop.
And this only includes the popular games I picked out. There's plenty more different games.

I really think it's a pathetic argument when people say there's not enough good games for the console. If you're talking about the price of the console, I agree it is a little expensive, but I own most of the above games and love the console enough to where it's worth it.

Playstation and Xbox can beat each other up while this console becomes more and more popular in the next couple years.

EDIT: Oh yeah, forgot Smash which will literally boosts the sales even more by its self. Thanks for reminding me, Animedan

Look, a lot of Nintendo systems were said that they would fail. (When 3ds first came out, nobody thought it would sell good at all. And look at it now. I can seriously pull up an article that was made in 2011, saying how the 3ds would never sell well.) I also know, from experience, that Super Smash Bros Brawl helped the Wii or at least it did here in Florida. (I have heard A LOT of people say they only got the Wii for Brawl.) So maybe, we just need Super Smash 4 to boost the Wii U sales. (Also, remember how the XBOX One *CoughCough Watercooler CoughCough* was originally taken as a terrible console, and now it's selling great?) Also, pricing, compared to the Xbox One and PS4 (Both $500 if I am correct) the Wii U is fairly cheap. (I'm not saying $300 is exactly cheap, but it is a $200 difference compared to the other new consoles.)

EDIT: http://www.operationsports.com/DustinT/blog/16805-why-the-3ds-will-lose/ Reizo, this is an article from 2012 talking about how the 3ds is/will be a total failure, and doesn't mention a single thing about prices. Though pricing is one out of many reasons people came up with. And this isn't the only article. I just found another, and I'm pretty sure there is alot more. (I would show a link, but this post is long enough already.)

That's because it was terribly overpriced at $250. The sales suffered considerably and they were forced to drop the price to $170, and now the 3DS is thriving.

My opinion on these games you're trying to tell me is a good reason to buy this console:

New Super Mario Bros. U Yawn. It's The same exact game as every other 'New Super Mario Brothers' game. Anyone who wants to play a game that actually tries to do something besides go through the motions the previous games went through will not want to play this game.
New Super Luigi U This is basically a DLC of The previously mentioned game. It shouldn't honestly count as a game on its own.
Scribblenauts Unlimited As far as I can tell, the concept behind every single one of these games is exactly the same. There's no wonder people wouldn't be interested in this game. I would play one game in the series, but I sure as heck would not want to play any more than that unless they brought in something totally new and different to the table. The art style is also very kiddish so while I am interested in the series, I can understand why normal 'gamers' would be turned off from it.
Pikmin 3 This game looked good, So game #1 as to why I would think about buying this system.
Nintendo Land "Test out our gimmicks Land".
Sonic and Sega All Stars Racing Transformed This is a racing game. While I am interested in playing it myself, it's still just a racing game. Mario Kart seems to be the only racing game that anyone I know shows interest in. A lot of people I know don't even know much of Sega beyond Sonic so they would be like "Who the heck are the rest of these characters?" Also it's not a good idea to list a game that is on multiple consoles as a reason to buy a Wii-U. Because I have a 360, why on earth would I buy a Wii U to play this when I can buy it for the system I already own and like?
Sonic Lost World This game was good on paper. They built it up and after watching gameplay of it and seeing the [lack of] story plot, I can honestly say that if I had bought and played this game I would have hated it and wished I had waited for a price drop. The game leaves a heck of a lot to be desired.
Mario and Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympic Games Yeah... I doubt anyone besides die hard Sonic and Mario fans play these games. How many of them are there now?
The Legend of Zelda Wind Waker HD While this is another game that I have that makes me want to buy a Wii-U, it's still ultimately just a remake of an old game painted with fancy colors.
Super Mario 3D World This game is a good reason to buy the system. While it seems presented as the exact same as the New Super Mario Brothers series (only you get to play as peach this time ALSO CATS OMG), this game is totally different and has such great potential. But since most people won't expect that out of Nintendo because of their history with other Mario games (the first two on this list being a major example), this game will probably undersell or not get the attention it deserves and Nintendo will 'play it safe' and go back to not doing anything special like they always do.
Family Party: 30 Great Games Obstacle Arcade Family 'party games' are not a good way to advertise that as system has good games. Party gimmick games are the main problem I have with Nintendo and their home consoles int he first place at this point. |:
Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate I'll give you this one too. Because I want to play this game since I've never tried the monster hunter series before.
Pokemon Rumble U The pokemon rumble games aren't fun. |: I've played them. They're seriously not fun. I'm a pokemon fan and I got one because I thought it'd be neat to try something different with pokemon. Pokemon Rumble is a horrible series because you're not playing with pokemon you're playing with little dinky looking wind-up-toys that look like pokemon. Not only is this a turn-off for even pokemon fans... you have that dreaded figure gimmick tacked on top of it. Skylanders gets away with it because the figures are nice to look at. But the Rumble U figures look. Like. Crap. So that makes it even more undesirable. And I'm one of the few people who actually like the figure concept.
ZombiU Oh boy. Another zombie game. Not like there's not 500 of these already. What's that? I also have to use the Wii U game pad as well? That totally doesn't sound annoying at all for me to do in the middle of running from zombies! I sure hope my reflexes are quick enough to allow me to do what I have to do on the game pad during an intense situation!

Never get upset when someone says there is not enough good games for the console. Because not everyone has the same opinion you do. What games you think are worth buying are a waste of money to others. So, while you seem to think that there's plenty of games that make this system worth spending money on, to a lot of people, it's just not worth it yet.

Out of all the games you listed, you only listed around 5 I would even be remotely interested in. The rest actively turn me off from wanting to buy this system because I'm not looking to play games that are just the same thing as games I already have (new super Mario brothers), the exact same as or a game I can get on a system I already have (Scribblenauts, Sonic All Stars Racing Transformed), or games that I am totally not interested in playing.

I don't believe Nintendo will fail this generation, oh no, that will only happen if they keep making gimmick consoles (as well as games that do nothing but repeat the motions of older games, which ultimately makes people less likely to buy the console if their big titles they can expect to be getting are just rehashes of the same-old same-old). The Wii U has a load of potential, it just has to get the games to make it worth buying. However, right now, it's not worth buying to me. I'm getting more use out of my 3DS than I ever hope to get at this moment with the Wii U.

Your opinion is different than mine. I agree with part of it though, because the 3DS is doing a lot better than the newest consoles out right now, especially since the newest consoles out repeat a lot in newer games that were in older games. However, I wasn't including the 3DS in my post. I was simply talking about Wii U vs. PS4. The 3DS was completely unrelated to my argument, because it's not a home console. I wasn't upset either, I was just stating my opinion on why people shouldn't talk about how the Wii U is going to fail. So in a way, I completely agree with you and don't agree with you in certain areas at the same time.

Sorry if I confused you, I should have made my argument more clear.

Well I definitely agree Nintendo has to step up their game if they want to make the console more successful.

They haven't done a very good job of giving developers a reason to invest in their console exclusively, but then Nintendo hasn't been very good at marketing their consoles as of late...the 3DS, is, of course thriving and I don't think Nintendo's about to lose out on that market!!!:)

Hopefully w/ the release of a new Smash Bros. game on the system as well as a new console Zelda game and a(I'm really begging for this!) new Metroid game, it'll do a bit better! Just don't let Team Ninja do that one, lol, grant it Other M wasn't horrible but it wasn't the greatest either! XD

Anyways, that being said I still plan on getting the Wii U(the WW HD Edition, if I can help it!), as there are enough games I like on it that'd be worth buying one for...

I think the fact that you had to include "Family Party: 30 Great Games Obstacle Arcade" or "Mario and Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympic Games" in this list goes to show how starved the system really is for high quality games. Also, Luigi U is just an addon pack essentially. And Wind Waker is an HD version of a game we already had 10 years ago.

Oh no, that's quite alright. I'd probably agree with you on that front. I don't even know if PS4 is better than XBOne at this point because I don't hear anything about the games, just the systems themselves. Out of the three next gen consoles I'm closer to wanting a Wii U than the others. ...Though I'll probably buy a pS3 before anything since there are so many games for it I want to play.

My main problem with systems is that they're not just for playing video games anymore. It's a little silly but I just want to put my game in the console, boot it up, and play it. I really don't care to sift through menus, run passed other features, and stuff like that before I can actually play my game. |8

Did he mean home console, or console in general? If we're including handheld then Nintendo are hardly irrelevant considering how well the 3DS is doing. I personally think they might be best sticking to the handheld market though.

I lost faith in Naughty Dog the moment they sold the rights to the Crash Bandicoot series, so why should I care what they say now? Besides, Nintendo dominates the heldheld market; even if the XBox1 and PS4 destroy the Wii U, no one's topping the 3DS.

I have to agree with the co-founder's statements. Considering that 3D World, a surprisingly fresh, recognizable and innovative game, the likes of which rarely seem to appear on Wii U, was purportedly trailing behind Knack in sales in the UK (http://www.gamerevolution.com/news/...3d-world-as-ps4-breaks-uk-sales-records-22869
0) and selling below expectations in Japan due to poor sales of the console itself, (http://bgr.com/2013/11/29/super-mario-3d-world-sales/) I have to wonder how much chance future trademark Nintendo titles on WiiU actually have of increasing sales to a number beyond what they are now.

To be perfectly honest, Nintendo should stick to the handheld business. That's just my personal opinion. If they wish to make it in the console market, they need to at least be current gen or better.
