Keep in mind, this is my second day in-game. Brand new town, I'm working on getting my approval rating, and of course, he sees me passing by and just HAS to tell me something. I'm thinking, sweet, an errand! That'll speed things up, right? Well, not quite, but it was SO worth it:





I didn't screencap everything he said, but he asked me to buy it for about 3k bells, and I was like sure, why not?

Aw Monty was in my starting villagers (well, move ins), I really took to him, he was one of the first villagers I became best friends with. Lucky to get a genuine painting from him too I normally get genuine ones from Julian, it's marshal who sells me them for 7k and they turn out to be fake

I'll be honest: even though I've played ACNL for a couple years, I have never had this happen before. I didn't even know villagers could sell you legitimate art until today!

Yeah villagers can sell you art - not that uncommon to be asked either, but you have to have around 10K showing in your pocket cos the price can vary up to around that.
I've had some fake, some real from them.
Certain feng shui colours can lower the price villagers ask for it and can increase the chance of it being genuine (Liquefy's faq on gamefaqs has details).
If you get offered the flowery painting - grab it! Cos there isn't a fake for this one (there's several paintings that are always genuine, again Liquefy's faq or Thonky's art guide tells you).

I'm not sure if this is a coincidence or not, but all the times when I've bought a painting from a villager for about 3k bells it has turned out to be real. And, whenever I've bought a painting for 7 to 10k, it's been a fake one!
