Yes. When I was holding a villager for someone, I remained on the same day. I kept T.T-ing back.
You have to be careful though. Remember that ACNL day starts at 06:00am.
Also! For example, today is 02/14:
When it's 02/15 02:00 am already, make sure to T.T back to 02:00 pm but on 02/14. Get what I mean? Not only check the time but the date too!

You can definitely keep turning back the time to remain on the same day so someone random doesn't move in. I've been doing it in my main town for about 2 weeks now, since my boyfriend is using his 3DS and won't let me transfer in another villager from my other town. .-.
Just TT back to any time after 6AM that same day. Do it again sometime before 6AM the next day. As long as you stay within the tow 6AMs, the day won't change and no one will move in.

... Whoa, I never thought about doing this. Thank you guys for the advice. o.o That's a good idea. I keep picking up villagers from peoples' voids because the game hates me.
AND NOOO DONT TRADE YOUR MERENGUE AWAYYYYY!!! youd have to cycle 16 to get her again!!! ;0; id say id try resetting for marshal, but unfortunately you cant get a smug in your first 5 villagers ): why not just keep it on the same day? ;; id hate to see you have to give up merengue.

i sleep in too; maybe set an alarm and then get up to push it back to like 7 am again, then go back to sleep? believe me, i hibernate like a bear, idk if i could keep up with that omg,,,
oh. WELL... D: if you /need/ to give this merengue up i can see if i reset enough to get her, or get her while cycling. but just try to wait it out first, okay? ;; i know how stressful this is trust me -hugs- im really really sorry.
