So after being told for the 500,000th time about needing fencing and the 1 Millionth time about appealing scenery I decided to stop trying to get a 5 star rating for a while. I just wanted to enjoy playing without that hanging over me. This morning I'm running around my island looking for Daisy Mae & BOOM! There's a Lily of the Valley on a cliff edge. Now I know this wasn't there yesterday because I was up in that area yesterday and no LotV. I ran to Isabelle expecting her to confirm the island had (FINALLY) reached 5 Stars but she didn't. She tells me it's (still) at 4 Stars and mentions that $&@# fencing again. I tried googling to find an answer and I did find one thing saying that internally the island is at Max Rating but that Isabelle will still only say 4 Star. This can be due to having items left all over the island. I'm guessing this means DIYs or items dropped instead of placed. I don't have any thing like that anywhere on my island though. I haven't picked up the fallen tree branches in 2 days but that's all that's lying out on the ground. Has anyone else had this happen to them? If so, how did you actually get the 5 Star rating to register with Isabelle? Thanks!

i think it's not possible to get it at 4 star, but your rating does change during the day (depending if you leave items outside). anything that will spawn on your island will be determined when you load your game, and that is tied to your rating before the game is loaded (or basically your rating the night before), so maybe you did reach 5 star but then lost it?

edit: also fallen tree branches does not count as "trash", but wood and other materials does.

It's possible (and extemely likely) for your rating to change multiple times a day, if you're rearranging things! You probably hit 5 stars in time for rollover, then did something to drop back down before you checked your rating again.

Other than removing unwanted flowers that spawn because it rains almost every day on my island I haven't added or removed any of the placed items in weeks. I haven't done any terraforming or laying down of paths either. I never leave items out (other than tree branches) as I have OCD and have to have everything in order. I don't think I could have hit 5 Stars with my island being unchanged for weeks.

It might have been your flowers then, having lots of flowers can compensate for having less fences I think. If you removed those flowers it might've have dropped to 4 while you were doing that.

Flowers do count towards your town score. So it probably happened like this:

1. You started the game today. It spawned new flowers, decided your town now had just barely enough style points to qualify for five stars.
2. Now that you were at 5 stars, it also made you a lily. 🥳
3. You started playing, and removed the extra flowers that the rain spawned. The town rating dropped back to slightly below the threshold for 5 stars because of it.
4. Isabelle told you this. Isabelle knows nothing about town design and suggested fences, even though more flowers would also put you back at 5 stars. :)

That might be the case. I have to remove some of the flowers though. They're overtaking my island from all the blasted rain.

If removing the flowers dropped me back to 4 stars then I'm going to stay at 4 stars forever. I have to clear some of the flowers. They're over running my island. I'm going back to not focusing on getting 5 stars and I'm going to ignore that one Lily of the Valley.

The town rating is based on a point system. You're now barely below the points required for the 5 stars, and you'll get it back soon enough. Just a little bit of extra decoration is probably enough. ;)

This happened to me too! I woke up to a Lily of the Valley on a cliff and ran to Isabelle and she told me my island was only 4 stars. I do pluck extra flowers from rain every morning so I guess the extra star could have been from those, but that's strange. You'd think too many flowers would cause your island to go down in rating.

actually there’s no such thing with flowers. towns has and had been covered with flowers even back in new leaf without it having any effects on town ratings.

too many trees & weeds, yes... but there’s no limit to flowers.

I'm wondering if it's some sort of slight glitch or something. For now I'm going to go back to enjoying the game and not trying to reach 5 stars.

I remembered that in NL the number of flowers didn't matter but how many flower seeds you planted did. I don't know if planting seeds counts for anything in NH. I'm getting rid of any unwanted flowers and going back to not trying for 5 stars right now. I'd rather just enjoy the game.

Although if anyone finds out an more info on this I'd love to know what's going on.

P.S. Idk if you know this but you can use a completely transparent design pattern to take up all the possible spawning slots around your flowers to prevent them from overflowing :D

probably what the others are saying above, but another thing to consider is did this happen after the update? maybe you discovered another new glitch

I had read this but I'm not sure I want to stop flowers from spawning altogether yet. Thank you for the info though! :)

Yes, this did happen after the update. Now I'm wondering if it is a glitch. Thank you for the suggestion!
