I've been wondering the same. You find some nice layouts if you google "kitchen set".
I'm currently turning my west room into a kitchen. Aside from the kitchen counters and appliances I'm also putting flower and fruit sets in that will be used as chairs and tables.
I have a fridge, a washing machine, an ironing set and a couple of tables with a couple of coffee machines, a bread bin and a kettle on them. Also a shelf as well!
On my old town, I just put in whatever looked like it could be in a kitchen. It was quite a lot, though, so I'm thinking about toning it down a bit, possibly more into a caf? than a kitchen.
I used the ranch set customized to white. Along with the kitchen sink, refrigerater, stove, kitchen island. Then i have table and chairs and a ton of food items such as sushi platter, toaster, stew pot. ect. Looks good to me. ^^
My kitchen is a mix of harvest and mush furniture, since I only like about half of each series, and they're only available during November, which is Harvest Festival month.
I have all perfect fruit bunches and random other food items scattered around on the tables, the harvest closet/dresser are like kitchen drawers, a harvest bed/sofa for relaxing, and a lovely kitchen with a mannequin in food garb cooking. Also, a creepy cauldron for lulz.
I have a mix of the green and sweets series, and stuff like the retro fridge, pine table, and that brown sink/stove. It's actually my favorite room in my house.
I have a tiny kitchen and I love it! I have a green retro fridge, an alpine cart, a stove, a trashcan, a grapefruit? table, a little stool and a lunch tray on the table. I have a cuckoo clock, a plant shelf of some kind and some other item on my walls. I can't remember what though! I have the citrus walls and a green rug. <3
I turned my north room into a kitchen for one of my townspeople, trying to give her home a sort of country-western vibe. (It isn't entirely like that, it's hard to describe, but the house from the story she is in is located in a village in the middle of a savanna.) I've had trouble finding decent furniture for it, but the range was a good item, along with the milk can and some of the alpine series. I've thrown in some ranch items, too. I'm trying to give it a sort of aged look because it's supposed to resemble an old house with a lot of personality. I think I've put the spice rack and some kind of picnic basket in there as well, and for now, I have the kitchen sink and the corner part, along with an island. (It's a WIP.)
For my mule I have the complete alpine series in green leaf and beige wood, complete with rug and wall. There's a small bedroom area in the corner (because I wanted to use the whole series in one room) and it turned out really great. In addition to perfect fruit, I used coffee cups, coffee maker, breadbox and kettles. Oh and moth orchids are beautiful! You could check it out in my dream town, it's the north room in Mules' house.
I use the ranch set customized white primarily since most of the kitchen appliances are white Though I also have a couple alpine furniture in my kitchen too!
When I had a kitchen room I just bought a lot of food items, a few tables, a lovely kitchen and that was about it. A lot of times I see the 7-11 and/or Sweets set being used for kitchens.
One question:
How do people get the food furnitures? I know sushi platter and the afternoon tea set are DLC-only but how about the ones like the pan and the pot?

Well, games can always be hacked to cheat but let's not assume the worst.
The 4 citrus furnitures is a common set in any AC game. Than there's a rare Kitchen Island only gotten from the island. In several furniture sets there are 1 or 2 pieces of furniture that fit well in a kitchen, and of course several pieces that don't belong to any set such as: ceramic hot pot, potbelly stove, pot rack, stewpot.
Some players also like to incorporate stuff from the 7/11 set. The Japanese game might have more DLC which fit a kitchen/dinner area.
