When you have an item in your inventory, it will get added to the Catalog machine you find at your T&T department store, where you will be able to order it whenever you need to (unless its a DLC or fortune cookie rare kinda item).
Having a big catalog gives you a badge :3 All you have to do to add an item in your catalog is simply have it in your pocket. So what people will usually do is go to other's town and just pick up an item and then drop it, and it will be in their catalog.
