All weapons have different DPS (Damage per second), homing, range, etc.
But there is such thing as a homing modifier.
Really the only way for you to really progress is through playing the game a lot and be willing to fuse weapons A TON since that's the main way of getting stronger weapons next to purchasing them.
When it comes two Single Player, have at least *** stars in Range or higher, and don't even worry too much about stars in Melee.
I suggest aiming for these modifiers, these are imo the absolute musts:
Health
Overall Defense / Shot Defense / Melee Defense
Recovery Effect
Some others that may help:
Speed / Running Speed
Homing
Shot Range
Freezing (Not as mandatory, but it would help when dealing with enemies in Land Battles, also Freezing doesn't work against Bosses..)
You probably won't ever get them all though, but just try and focus getting some of them if you ever dare on taking 9.0.
You should chose weapons you are content with, but some weapons I'd recommend:
Gaol Blade
First Blade
Darkness Bow
Saggitarius Bow
Violet Palm
Viridi Palm
Powers I suggest:
Pisces Heal (This does wonders with Recovery Effect.)
Effect Recovery, 2 or 3
Health Recovery, 3 or 4.
Super Armor / Aries Armor
Breif Invincibility, 2 or 3.
Crisis Recovery
I don't remember how I had them set up unfortunately, and I'm pretty sure not all of them even fit the whole grid..I know I relied on these powers the most if not the whole time.
You'll have to mess around with that yourself.
