Katie will remain in your town for a week. She only leaves during a WiFi session.

You get a special piece of furniture for uniting mother and child.

Yes she will be there pretty much indefinitely until she is reunited with her mother. The reward is an item called the portrait. It is just a painting that Katie drew that looks generic.

EDIT: The portrait is one possible item you can get from her as a reward.

I don't know about just a week. I have a friend that keeps pm me about the mother still being there and it has been over 2 weeks.

Well I can't vouch from experience but my friend who has been playing since the game came out insists she is still there. And she pm ed me over 2 weeks ago and did again yesterday.
