Just Finished 999 and Virtue's Last Reward!

So I just finished both of these games for the first time. 100% of course so I watched the true endings. I finally understand the praise. The only thing that really annoys me a lot about VLR is Clover's voice actor. Still excellent games and I say what you want I think Virtue's Last Reward has a fantastic story maybe even darker with the whole annihilation reactors blowing up. I'm still trying to fully understand everything but the True Ending in VLR is awesome.

I have to say Quark's letter left me a little teary eyed.

Has anyone else here played or finished them? I feel like talking about them! I keep rewatching the true ending in VLR. It's so good.

Love love love those games. Two of the best games ever made for the DS, two of the best games ever made, period. I had the UK version for VLR which kept the Japanese voice acting - I've heard clips of the US version and I'm so glad I didn't have to put up with that on my game! I have never been so involved in a game before, and never been that teary at a game before. It was emotionally hard to get to some of the endings, having to choose "Betray" when I REALLY didn't want to. And all those silly teenage innuendo jokes. Yep, love them. And really glad other people do too - maybe we'll get more games like this.

It's one of my favourite series. I only picked up 999 on a whim, but I sure am glad I did it.

I had the UK version for VLR which kept the Japanese voice acting - I've heard clips of the US version and I'm so glad I didn't have to put up with that on my game!

The NA version has both English and Japanese voices. I kept it in English most of the time, and while the Japanese was probably better, I didn't think the dub was terrible. Zero III was certainly the best of the lot.

It was emotionally hard to get to some of the endings, having to choose "Betray" when I REALLY didn't want to.

Having to choose Betray against Luna, in particular, to fill up all the endings crushed me inside every time. Especially when you realize that she's the only one who never betrays you. Her ending really got to me, and she's probably my favourite character in the game.

I'm super pumped to see what's in store for the next entry in the series.

What?! The US version has fantastic voice acting! Zero Jr, especially is incredible. How could anyone not like the VA!? Clover however is bad.

To be fair Clover is bad in Japanese too.


Well anyway now I'm trying to get my friends to try my copy of 999 even if it means them having to erase my data. This is the first visual novel I ever bought and I'm glad I did.

I agree that Clover was bad in Japanese too - fingernails down a blackboard bad. Alice had a couple of moments as well.

I didn't like the NA voice clips I heard, for several reasons. Firstly, I am English, so an American accent isn't as "comfortable" for me to listen to as it would be for an American. Second, I really really hate reading at the same time as listening, and as I don't know any Japanese the Japanese voice acting was more like a musical background than "words". It added an extra layer of meaning (tone of voice etc) without intruding on my reading the text. Thirdly, Clover. 'Nuff said.

And Sheepish, I agree entirely with your spoiler. Broke my heart every time.

Oh man! Why would you do that? The fun is getting to the end and getting killed lol.

999 is a fantastic game. I can't believe how great it is and the writing! I definitely recommend it and I bought it off Amazon for $20 new too.

I got a couple endings for 999, but never finished the game to get all of them....will have to go back to it sometime, 'cause it certainly IS an interesting game!

Oh man then you haven't seen the True Ending which requires you to get multiple endings before you can fully understand the story and characters. It's incredible.
